We're being told to completely limit web browsing at work to work related stuff...so during work hours, I won't be able to check in or anything!  Will still be active in the mornings and evenings as usual!

Freakin' A.....

Wow, what a drag.  I wonder if somebody was caught with porn on their work computer.  I remember when i worked for a honda dealer as an employee and they got a new network administrator, the guy came in and pretty much added a huge list of keywords that for the most part pretty much shut down any site that employees wanted to visit.  Sucked really bad.

Not sure if they feel people are 'wasting time' or whatever...but I'll still be able to log on from home in the mornings and evenings, so we'll survive! Big Smiley Grin Laughing

My 2 Cents

I am not chuckling at your situation which sounds like a radical change, but ---

Before the "dot-com" bust, I would from-time-to-time chide folks who were only active during the work-week and silent on the week-ends because they were too cheap to have a home PC + net connection. They blasted me back that being able to "goof-off" on the net, on company time made them so super-productive when they did get around to company work that their bosses practically begged them to screw-off a lot. While I got their point, I had to wonder about their bosses.

If I have heard correctly in the last few days, the Federal Securities & Exchange Commission has been hit with the discovery of pornography (probably the most boring, repetitious art form existing -- nothing new in recorded history since at least Roman times except the medium; without religious proscription it would interest only those passing through puberty or mired in deep frustration) on the PCs of several top executives. I could rant about about my experience with such jerks when I was working. It's simple -- they are paid too much to do too little. They delegate the real work and become frustrated and bored because there are too many at their level and too few real workers. The real cure is not only to fire the ones with porn on their computers, but also to eliminate their job slots - permanently. OOps, now I am leading into a rant.

Ssssh..... Don't tell anybody

Pat, check out Google for their gmail and whatever messenger they use first.  I'll briefly tell you why... (yeah like that's possible for me).

I had a Hotmail account for a long long time, and my inbox would receive aproximately 500+ junk mail every single day, and my junkmail box would receive about 80% legitimate mail as well as another 2 or 300 junkmail.  My gmail account receives aproximately 30 junk spam mails per day and 99% of them end up in the junkmail folder, very rarely one will get misdirected to my inbox and I've yet to find any legitimate messages in the junkmail folder.  It's my opinion that any filtering that Microsoft does with Hotmail is absolute crap, and the filtering that Google does is excellent.

You won't get much junkmail at first with hotmail (well, Microsoft will send you some that ends up in your inbox) but after a couple months of using the address and once it gets out what it is, it's doomed, absolutely doomed to be spammed for however long you maintain it.

I finally just gave up on my old hotmail account which was a shame because it was one of the hotmail accounts that could still be read in a local mail program like Outlook where as last I checked they don't offer that to accounts for the past couple years because they obviously want you to go onto the site and see the advertisements.  Google on the other hand allows you to use whatever mail program you normally use to collect your mail through their servers.

Just my opinion.

Interesting thoughts CB, I'll wait and see how bad this gets...I have no problem making the switch...I'm really only using the hotmail acct. to communicate w/ folks like you guys, the Renaissance team in Germany and a couple close friends...so changing wouldn't be a huge deal!

thanks man,
pat!

I am bewildered by the variety of email services available.

I like to keep one address so I don't lose touch with people -- as I did a few years ago when my hard-drive and local PC workshop combined to screw me by failing in sequence.

I stick with my internet-connection server because they are reliable and they provide an excellent email service. I can access my email on-line in their server program which has already screened out the bulk of the spam. There I can dump the little spam that has leaked through the filters before I download the real stuff to my PC email program.

That probably doesn't make much sense to computer geeks, but I am very happy with it. But next, I have have to figure-out how to do it faster.

Happy Dance Questioning

What I've learned over the years is that if you don't want to loose contact with people, then you have to have one of the Google or Hotmail type of free accounts.  I've done it too many times where I've given out my ISP email address only to switch ISP when I move somewhere and thus lose that email address and the contacts that used to email me through them.  Samantha used to give out her college email address that she got when she started to teach at the college here, now she's not working for them anymore and while she still has access to that account right now, she won't in about 6 months to a year when they refresh the accounts and dump all the old staff accounts that were let go in the past 6 months to a years time.  So for me, I now only give out my google email for everything so that I will always have access to my inbox and contacts.
