Hi Avalonia.  I don't suspect it's any surprise to anybody really.  Could you cite where you got the information if it's in articles as I'd like to read about it if it's from MC themselves and not a forum post that might be little more than somebody with tears in their eyes.

I didn't actually expect them to finish Cities 2011 to be honest, but if MC says it themselves about the money issues, perhaps they are fishing to find a publisher with deep pockets that wants to invest in their 2011 product and this is there way of getting the word out that they are looking without officially looking maybe.  So much speculation on my part I know.

Hope you are feeling better.

Yes, this should suprise NO ONE.  They blew it at the alter of a misconceived MMO pipe-dream and now, thusly, they may be done.  It's a shame because they had, in their grasps, the keys to a pretty massive kingdom and rather than listen to the folks who were giving them correct advice about how to create the successor to SimCity 4, they decided to try and take the easy, shallow and 'trendy' way out...and it may cost them their existence....

It is, ultimately, a sad thing...but not surprising at all.

Hope you're feeling well Avalonia!!

later,

Serves them right really... It is all about the money, never about the consumer, but if they actually listened to their customers they would probably be flying high right now.

I wish this would happen to EA or UBI and really affect their deep pockets... maybe then they would understand and us consumers would finally get the completed working products that we asked and pay for (not this full of bugs incomplete (we will patch later, but never do) crap).

If that SimCity5 developed by the community was to ever be finished and released, that would probably sell millions.  MC should have listened, they could have too.

Thanks Pat.

It is a sad thing that what started out as the game that was going to kick SimCity 4's butt, never really materialized.  I have to wonder if the powers that be in their organization wasted money during development to the point where they just couldn't make a game that would seriously compete with a product that's already been on the market for over 7 years.  I say this because honestly, how do you make a product, involve the primary consumer group that is your market and then just ignore them?

Could anybody be so seriously dimwitted that they totally ignore the consumer they want to attract?  Honestly i can't imagine that anybody could be this dim witted, and have to think that they tried to pinch pennies for one reason or another to the point where there wasn't the funds to create the uber game they talked up about in the beginning.

I didn't really get into the whole CXL scene until the beta was released, prior to that all I could think about was CityLife which I really disliked due to the whole social aspect of the game which I thought was total rubbish.  But by the beta stage it seems to me that they had already totally diverged from the path they tried very hard to make us believe they would be taking and resigned to just doing what they thought best instead of what their primary consumer group knows was best.

Or maybe their simply a bunch of talentless hacks that couldn't create the game that they talked up to the consumers and were just blowing hot air out of their butts and finally realized that their game engine was nowhere near what it would be to create said uber game.

I don't know what it is, but I'm definitely not shocked by it at all.  I'm more shocked that they are only now admitting and going to court about their financial problems, how they couldn't see the writing on the wall in March or Janurary for that matter is beyond me.  I'd have to guess that they put off their financial announcement in hopes of getting one more month of sales out of CXL because surely nobody would buy the product if MC folds up and closes the doors without giving the community the tools they really require to improve on the game and or mod, extend etc.

Edit  The other thing I think about is that there really won't ever be a real contender in the simcity name to SimCity 4.  They gave us a game that people were able to work with to create all this great content and mods for and they'll never be able to compete with that, no matter what they give us, it will appear shallow and lacking content compared to what we have now with SimCity 4.  However, I'm not opposed to them giving us a Simcity 5 as long as it has all the necessary tools and is capable of having people create the content like they are doing now.  I just don't personally think that EA is really ever going to do that, not at least as far as if SimCity 4 is still selling well for them, which every christmas it seems to fly off the shelves still to this day.

And actually, I think they learned their lesson with Simcity Societies, that was going to be their SC5 if you look at some of the files that had the designator of Simcity 5 in them, but it seems to me that somebody caught that and said, NO WAY, that would kill the franchise dead, let's name it something else entirely to keep the products seperate.  It was a good move, else people wouldn't have the desire to wait any longer for a real SC5 that may still never come.  It's going to be hard to outdo SimCity 4 at this point in the game.  They really should have been updating it over the past 7 or so years with new game features and finally take the stomp into the 3d gaming arena with it.  But letting it sit for this long now isn't helping matters in regards to suddely popping out a SC5 somewhere down the road.  If they haven't done one yet I honestly can't imagine them doing it later, after all, you strike while the iron is hot, not after its been sitting for 7 or 10 years.

But I guess that Mr Wright said something about how he'd takin Simcity as far as he could, and then comes along The Sims which totally outshadows simcity games in popularity so they put Maxis over on that until Maxis is no more except by name.  Nope, I think they would have been updating Simcity franchise if they had plans to do a real contender to SimCity 4, not this Societies thing.

I've been thinking about the sims engine for a while now.  It's gotten to the point where we can create our own neighborhoods.  I have to wonder if the next logical step would be to take that engine and try to utilize it (modified of course) to create the real SimCity 5?  Obviously, they would need to extend the size of the landscapes to be much larger maybe 4 times larger than the largest landscape in Sims 3 now, and add in all the transportation functions as well as the simulation.

Really, it would not surprise me if they managed to take Sims 3 and turn it into a Simcity 5 somewhere down the line, couple years, 3, 5, who knows.
