Does it make me a SICK PUPPY that the Game's Radar review actually makes me want to buy this thing MORE?  seriously, the DRM has me holding off, but that review has me so damned intrigued...seriously, I'm probably whistling past the graveyard on this, but my feeling is, if you can manage the economic chains in Anno, you can handle this...

Now I'm really peaved...I was all settled in to NOT buying this title and then this taunting/dare me to play review Big Smiley Grin Laughing Big Smiley Grin Laughing!

I officially have an ego problem.  Or at least an OCD problem when it comes to supply chains!

Does anyone know if anyone's cracked the DRM for this yet to allow it to be played 'offline'?

If you get it, I want a full review :P Never played any settlers game, but it looks interesting enough to try it out.

As far as the DRM goes, it in idea and pratice does suck... BUT, if you are going to be on a computer with internet, the DRM is not noticable at all... I broke down and got ACII with this DRM, and have not had any problems (I was going to hold out, becuase this DRM really is [*******], if I was a traveller and had a good gaming laptop, i'd be pissed too).

As far as cracks go, I doubt there will be one for awhile... these games are coded with the DRM so you download content as you play (I believe - or atleast download some code that tells the game, yea you can continue), otherwise the game will break... even with a crack I don't know if the game will play like it should, at least not for awhile... I don't think ACII has been sucessfully cracked yet (which in part is why a lot of people are complaining about the DRM, that is those who usually pirate can't and are pissed :P)

Well, that didn't take long...yeah, I have it...geez I suck.

First off, and I haven't installed it...BUT ARE YOU KIDDING ME NO MANUAL?????  16 pg. Manual that the insert BOASTS 'Digital Manual Available and Downloadable on the Game DVD!'  Seriously, UBISOFT can bite me.  Yeah, I bought it, not sure when I'll play it but this company is a VIRUS in the gaming world.  Now, the flipside of that argument is that if UBI hadn't purchased both Anno and Settlers series from their original devs, would those small devs still exist and be able to make these games?  Probably not...thus, my rage is tempered by the fact that of all the sucky big game companies out there, UBI is the one that recognizes the Builder market.

You know many people said that buying on steam was like renting your games.  I got over that, it took me a while to adopt buying my games on steam, however THIS GAME really feels like I am just renting it and that they can turn it off at anytime they wish and I really don't like that feeling at all.

I've played the demo add nausea and quite honestly it doesn't feel like a builder at all to me.  Why... I can't pinpoint it but it seems to me that there are far too few buildings that we are placing, maybe that is because of the way they have the strategy of the game, with needing to build only those workshops that are allowed to be attached to each building.  I realise this is a big part of the strategy of the game but it lowers the feeling that I'm playing a builder and makes me fee more like I'm playing a RTS game.  I'm still unsure if that is good or bad since like the Settler game that came before it, it's feeling like it's trying to be a jack of all trades sort of game, doesn't really get into either the builder or the military, just throws a bit of both at us.

When you play it Pat, make sure to give us a rundown of it, I'm still on the fence and leaning more towards not buying it unless they change the DRM to something less intrusive to playing it when ever I like or until it comes up on sale on steam, or impulse.

The other thing I'm worried about is that from the map provided on the demo, I find that initially I have to build exactly the same buildings in the same spots, so the map is going to wear out.  Without the provision of new maps, it's going to get old fast.  There is the map forge that allows you to adjust the resource amounts of each resource, however I believe people said that the resources can't be moved, i.e. you can't change that first rock quarry in the demo map for an iron quarry, and if you could, quite likely you would bust the game to where the player really couldn't play it.

CB My reply comments post on this thread seems to have disappeared into the ether, I don't think it was controversial enough to be deleted. Also when posting in these envelopes, at the bottom of the box, the last line starts disappearing under the rim and needs constant lifting up. Is this a bug or an attempt to stop the more garrulous members posting overlong comments.

Hope you are keeping well, I've seen some of your posts over on the Settlers Discussion forum, - makes sense, (whilst trying in vain to get it started), I think in time there will be a lot more content added as this has the makings of a very big game - a Map Editor would be a welcome addition though I'll be relying on others as I don't have the time to utilise one at the moment

That post by Khalan came to the rescue in "Server Problems" that and a few other measures got it up and running and now its all dancing and light, so thanks for hosting this forum, up to now its the only reliable fix on the Internet, so its made me a Happy Bunny   Happy Dance

I haven't deleted any posts is probably more than a year or two at this point so it was probably a goof on the server connection.

The bug that you describe happens in some browsers and as I understand it, it's up to Microsoft or whom ever browser it is that has this happen to fix it as the forum is supposedly coded correctly and it's something to do with the browser not being fully compliant.  If you run I.E. 8.0 or higher, then use the little torn paper icon next to the refresh button to make it I.E. 7.0 compliant and hopefully it won't do it anymore for you.

That of course assumes you are using I.E. 8.0.  I am and have always had that icon checked for almost all sites that I visit on a regular basis as one feature or another of theirs isn't 8.0 compliant or rather 8.0 isn't compliant with the features used.

Glad you got it worked out, I know that Khalan suffered not being able to play for the longest time until I recreated his profile for him, after that he was able to play just fine.  Hope it continues to work for you too.  I know that some "fixes" are unfortunately only temporary and eventually the problem reoccurs, let's hope for both you and Khalan that's not the case.

Enjoy.

Yeh! that Settlers 7 game what a run around that gave me, it was only out of bloody mindedness that prompted me to give it one last shot and no one was more relieved when that Burning Candle finally gave way to a connection. What cured it for me was the fresh instal with the now complete all in one 1.03.1230 patch following a thorough uninstal using that tech gurus guide. Where I was unlucky was in a corruption of the downloaded early version where the game launcher and two separate patches were applied. Then believing it was Ubi's server fault. Then when I reinstalled without thoroughly cleaning out all the remnant files which if not removed lead to yet another incomplete/corrupt installation - ad infinitum. I've just completed my second test with Firewall and Antivirus enabled, no problems, just have to check the Router now, should be OK- Some (2) on the Settlers forum say they have done all those things and still no joy, and they have my sympathy because I know how frustrating it can be, and will be returning their game.

I'm using the 8 version on my browser so have followed your advice and and used the 7 compatibility icon, if it persists I'll use the new Opera 10.51 which is as good as they say it is and is much speedier than the rest though it hasn't got all my settings tweaked as yet.

My last, lost post stated briefly that the Gamespot review gave Settlers a 7.5, partly down to their apathy to the genre and partly because of DRM issues, but when the game is working well it should score about 9.5 in my humble opinion, if you look at the title page in the credits, the amount of time, effort and skill put into this project by a huge multinational team shows how much has gone into the game, which goes largely unappreciated by the majority of gamers. Ye Gads! some car launches involve less people. Looking through the notified game releases to the end of 2011, it makes depressing reading, mainly all shoot em up FPS or hack and slash/grindfest RPG so we should be grateful for the Settler type genre morsels we are tossed

Ah the disappearing line is cured as well, blame Microsoft, your tip paid off.

Dawn of Fantasy is in beta testing and is due for a June - September release, check it out I think you may like it.

Well its either Voyage Century (a FREE good quality MMO adventure style RPG with excellent visuals and depth) or Settlers 7 -  the Gods allowing, for me tonight, so see you next time.

All I really need at this point is ... (drum roll please.......)  Diablo III.  Yup, with Diablo 3, OpenTTD, SimCity 4 and a dable into Settlers 6 now and again I'd have enough games to hold me through to the next big City Building game launches (when ever that might happen).

Rumors on the D3 release have swirled around for a while now so I wish Blizzard would atleast give us a definite year for release.  I was expecting it out last May (for my birthday present) as people rumored that it was coming out May 11, 2009, then held back to Sept. 2009, now held back to sometime in 2010, and finally rumored again that it might not be until 2013.  I'm hoping this year.

The new settlers 7 game is indeed very poorly made and because it's online only thiat is why this is the worst game ever made by ubisoft. Ubisoft continues to not listen to the consumers complaints and unless ubisoft starts listening they could go out of business. Well maybe not out of business but the cosumers are not happy. Settlers 7 could be a great game but only if ubisoft listens to our complaints.
