Settlers 7 is now out on steam but you cannot buy it yet from them as there is still no price, however you can buy it from direct2drive for around $59.95 and its the settlers 7:Gold Edition. I don't know about gamersgate.

If it weren't for needing to be online to play, and the price I'd buy Settlers 7.  But I think I'll wait until the price comes down a bit.  The demo didn't exactly thrill me all that much.  Perhaps the rest of the game would with the different ways of winning, but I don't get that feel that I'm playing a city building game with Settlers series so it's not really my thing for CB play.  I don't really see the point to building an army when it's just a matter of overwhelming forces that wins like in the demo where they say that you're sending 6 troops against the other person 3 or 4 so it's not going to be a problem.

Plus the game sort of runs like mollases in winter for me, I mean when I want to move the camera around it just feels sluggish, and slow and really annoying.  Im sure this could be rectified by turning down the graphics but what fun is it to have a nice computer and graphics card and have to turn down the settings.

I see little point in doing it that way, I'd much prefer if the other regions were won over by economic dominance that made the inhabitants of the other region want to join yours.  But to each their own.

Oh and according to Steam:
The Gold Edition includes an Exclusive Map, Castle forge elements allowing players to make their cities unique and customize their castles: 1 gate, 2 windows, 1 bay, 1 balcony and 1 gargoyle, PLUS the complete soundtrack of the game.

Doesn't sound all that worthy of an extra 10.00 in my opinion.

Speaking of settlers 7, I like the Settlers: heritage of kings, but like the early versions like 2,3,4, and the original are far much better than this new version that just came out. I am like you I don't really like online playing games especially when it comes to a game like the settlers. Ubisoft should have made it simple to play meaning you don't need a internet connection to play the game. With all the hackers out there I am too crazy about sharing my personal information with ubisoft either.
