I had the same problems with a version from Amazone.  (could not patch the game and crashes when trying to build).  If you're ready to spent another $20, you'll find a dowloadable version (version 1. 1, already patched) at Terragame. com.  That's what i did and the game works great on XP).

Try deleting BeachLife. exe and installing the UKBeachLifePatch (I got mine from www.eidosinteractive.co.uk/support/search.html?gmid=133 , don't know if it matters).   Then go to www.crackloader.com/download_crack/Beach_Life_1.1_NoCD_152136.html and nab the 1. 1 NoCD crack then cut&paste into the beach life folder where the old . exe was.

I was having the same sorts of problems as you (game crashing, patches didn't like files) and that fixed it for me, though I'm using XP.

I hope no one minds if I mention that this thread has a lot of gameplay related posts in addition to the problems with the differences between British and US versions.
