I am convinced that LG Towers on one beach follow one another opening & closing -- but the problem is figuring out what is one beach.
That is not quite correct. All the LG Towers on one beach will follow one another ONLY if they form an unbroken chain (i.e. are within patrol zone of the adjoining ones).
STANDARD STAFFING
FOR LIFEGUARDS

>> All Beaches: Not covered 2000 - 0600
>> Each Beach with Multiple Towers
     > Relatively inactive end, 0600 - 1600
     > Relatively active end, 1000 - 2000
     > Intermediates, 0700 - 1700 (default)
>> Single Tower Beach: 0700 - 1700 (default)
I think this provides a framework which can be adjusted if needed.

I think one could determine the patrol zone by watching the LG, but I have not taken the time for accurate observation. A very quick look seems to indicate that it is ~ one+ inch on the far-out zoom. How much the zones of two adjacent Towers might need to overlap isn't clear. It is clear that a long beach needs at least one intermediate Tower for the Towers on the ends to operate in concert.

I opine that it doesn't do to scrimp on LG Towers.

Part of my reason is an experience (in the 2nd week) of a sudden surge of guests choosing to swim early, mid-day and late from a different beach AND many got in trouble. Trying to "catch-up" on coverage was fairly unsuccessful.

Crickey, that is a wealth of good information.  Thumbs Up
I'm afraid I'm just too lazy (or to even try) to go that deep  into the physics side of the game.

Here is a second try at tables to try to illustrate how the various buildings 'unlock' others. It's somewhat like the "trees" in other games, but hard to illustrate since some relationships seem to be arbitrary or "gamey."

The 1 means only that the 'unlock' is the Hotel -- which really means nothing since it's always there. The 2 means the building is on one of the other two lists\groups. >edit<

My 2 Cents Part\most of the reason I am struggling with the tree of unlocking buildings is to try to develop a crib sheet for planning a lay-out -- as opposed to just thowing things onto the map in a hap-hazard way.

For example, how should the Hotel Pool be sited?
  • Close in front
  • Left
  • Right
  • Or entire out of proximity
Part of the consideration is the Pool Bar which is unlocked by the Pool. It really isn't very attractive, but it fits in a small space -- which makes it very useful for those small patches of non-beach near the beach, but perhaps not so great right near the Hotel.

To make the Hotel look good, I'm beginning to lean toward siting the Pool on the right, putting a Cocktail Bar right up by the front door, and the General Store to the left. But unless one has the 'unlock tree' memorized, it's hard to vary a 'build-order' - eh?

FOR DISCUSSION

Just in case anyone would like to comment, here are a few of my conclusions -- mostly for 'sandbox' but perhaps generally applicable:

First Building to site:
Burger Bar
aka Fast Food Stand
.

ASAP upon starting, get your Builders to work on this one. Although it's M\3 to F\1, you have to feed your guests anytime they wish to eat (Open 09-18), so "time's a wastin' !" (And don't forget to hire the other two Builders.)

TOP FIVE
Buildings to keep guests happy
and unlock other buildings.
  • Hotel Pool
  • Life Guard Tower(s)
  • Soft Drink Stand
    • Besides what it unlocks, it complements the 'Burger Bar'
  • Beach Bar (followed quickly by Beach BBQ; both open 24 hrs)
  • Cleaners' Office
.
BIGGEST QUESTION
THE ICE CREAM STAND

When and where should it be built? Is it good for anything other than the F\3 to M\2 attraction to balance the essential 'Burger Bar'?

REVISITED

The one thing that I seem to remember most about this game was the "stock" purchases and how they were likely added as a faux way to absorb our profits to make the game more difficult financially.
...
1. I'm looking for that elusive optimal build order that I feel really must exist in SB.  In other words there must be certain buildings that should be built first to keep the patrons happy while earning money at the same time so that other buildings can be built.  The maps that I've tried thus far have me running out of funds very fast indicating that I'm not building in the right order.

I have already mentioned my interpretation of the game's accounting system reports. I have not started testing the financial side because I used the money cheat extensively to try the building side of things.
Ssssh..... Don't tell anybody Wink Wink

SANDBOX
Build Order

Untested Theory
In Which I "stub my toe" rather badly.

Hopefully one will have looked at the campaign game for the island to gain a general impression. Certainly, the lay-out should not be considered optimal but only ONE suggestion and an opportunity to survey the "lay of the land."

When starting the 'sandbox', the instant first step is to hire the two additional builders. The initial construction is key to having something available for your first guests. To boost the Builder's happiness\productivity, a $1 raise is probably worth the cost - if you keep them working.

Soft Drink Stand
Perhaps it worth fiddling a bit on the "out-of-sight" side of the Hotel to site this essential building if one doesn't have specific 'pre-plan' site. It's essential, and later on there's nothing wrong with more than one.

Burger Bar NO
Properly placed near the Hotel, this will provide food and will last over the long term. Get it out of the construction stream quickly. (Open 09-18) So it's not what I thought it was; the Beach BBQ is really needed. A Cafe is more important near the Hotel. Perhaps it is most useful near a small beach which has no space for the BBQ.

Hotel Pool
A major project needed to give guests something to do and unlock other significant buildings. Caution: Its placement sets the tone of the Hotel complex. Don't just "plop" it in because it's too hard to correct.

Life Guard Tower #1
One has to guess which beach is closest to the Hotel and will also be favored be favored by the early guests. I guess that the LG Tower will be attractive to these computer drones; but one needs to build at least one quickly.

Beach Bar
It is so essential for development of the beaches - so if sited on the beach with the LG Tower, your guests will have something to do. (Follow-up with the Beach BBQ nearby for those "any-hour" snacks.)

It seems to me that in 'sandbox' one needs to hurry to provide "something" for those early guests so their rents and fees can be collected.

>>Second Day<<
if the builders' capacity is exhausted on the first day.

Cleaners' & Mechanics'
It's a coin toss which should be first, but both are needed immediately. Please note that it is my recommendation that they should not be hidden at the "Builders' Yard" area - except for one of the Mechanics' - because of 'walking time'. Also remember that you may add staff somewhat slowly.

Pedalo Rental
It's a key building and they seem not to be bothered by sharks.

... From the Spring Break manual page 21, Guest Opinions - Totty: "Guests love beautiful people and everyone has hopes of a little holiday romance. The better the totty in your resort, the happier your guests will be." ...

I thought that was just a bit too "nice" for the censors. The British developers were just "tarting it up" so the reviewers for the rating boards could wink.

According to Ted Duckworth's dictionary of British Slang, totty was originally a term for a prostitute in late 1800s. Assuredly the developers knew that.

Look closely at the so-called "holiday rep." and their "Chalet" and you will see how only a very few elements are missing from the provision of prostitutes. One wonders if someone with coding skills might find those elements simply "remarked out" of the program code.

I really stubbed my toe on this one; somehow I overlooked that it is NOT open 24 hours, but only 09-18. So it goes in the same category as the Ice Cream Stand. The really important fast-food stand is the Beach BBQ which comes just after the Beach Bar. It is far more important to have a Cafe early and near the Hotel.

Misc. Gameplay Notes.

So far my theory that the only toilets are those provided in the Toilet Block building has been proving out. You need to start building them early and build many. They get frequent use and - if clean - usually generate a "thumbs-up" as people leave them.

You don't have to do very much to start getting positive feed-back from landscaping - a couple of shrubs (they need rotating to look best), a couple of flower squares, a few strips of grass, and perhaps a tree do wonders.

The big expense is the paths which the people really need. Employees will go across open ground (I didn't think so at first), but seem to prefer to use paths - which can take them way out of their way.

Agreed Happy Wink Wink

I think I mentioned it once before, but I'll ask again:

Extra Accommodation Blocks

Does anyone have suggestions about where they should be built? e.g. with the view side toward a beach or a park? Should they be clustered or alone? Is any particular attraction better close to them? Once I tried a Hot Tub (JacuzziŽ is actually a brand name; I'm surprised it's used in the game with a notation) between two Blocks and it had heavy use for a long time rather than the usual initial surge only.

I notice that the background noise gets quite loud as an area is developed. Has anyone noticed if that bothers the guests?

Questioning

The term spa is associated with water treatment which is also known as balneotherapy. Spa towns or spa resorts (including hot springs resorts) typically offer thermal or mineral water for drinking and bathing. They also offer various health treatments.
