Hi, I recently discovered this site, and I'm still working my way through everything - the amount of info here is incredible, and everyone seems so helpful.

I'm probably a bit unusual in that I'm a female gamer recently retired, living in UK, so I'm probably older than a lot of gamers around here but I've been playing pc games since I had my first pc way back.  Anyone remember the good old days of DOS and having to configure the memory for each game  Big Smiley Grin Laughing? Dates me a bit I guess.  Anyway, I used to play a lot of rpg's, and then got addicted to the city builders, starting with Caesar III, Pharaoh, Zeus, Emperor, various Settlers, CotN, Sim City, CivCity Rome and Glory of the Roman Empire.  I've recently discovered the Anno games and am slowly learning 1701.  I'll probably advance to 1404 but not sure if my graphics would do it justice at the moment.

I spend my days looking after cats and husband and housework, but I can't wait to get on my computer and lose myself for hours in one of the little worlds that resides on my hd.  Firstly, though I am going to spend a long time browsing these helpful and informative forums.

Hi there Catfriend and welcome to the forum.

I spend my days looking after cats and husband and housework, but I can't wait to get on my computer and lose myself for hours in one of the little worlds that resides on my hd.

How many cats do you look after?  Your name is very applicible   Wink Wink.
Yep housework gets in the way when the ole pc is beckoning.   I agree it is great to beable to lose oneself in the virtual worlds that we encounter and to beable  to get away from "real" life for a bit.  Gosh I remember in oblivion I became quite attached to my first horse the pinto and found it very hard to let him go back "home" after I had bought myself another horse...then the new horse became inseperable....funny really as they are only pixels  Bashfull Female  Laughing

Welcome to the forums Catfriend!

I surely do remember trying to squeeze every last bit of free memory out of that 640k in MS-Dos.  And setting up soundblaster settings correctly etc.  Things are a lot easier nowadays.

This is a great forum, hope you find it helpful.

Ah yes the good ol' days of dos.

Remembering back to having 10MB hard drives and thinking that nobody will EVER need more than that.  2MB of RAM only Bill Gates must surely be able to afford that.

And the constant fiddling with config.sys and autoexec.bat could surely lead to premature graying at the temples.

Remember that we are a very loose forum here, we don't quibble if something ends up in the wrong category of forum, we believe in having fun, passing on information and well... There's very few things that would get you in hot water here so feel free to let your hair down and enjoy yourself without worrying about whether or not something you've posted is in the right area or not.  I know that when I visit other forums that have extensive category systems it almost brings on an anxiety attack just trying to figure out where my post should go, I wanted to avoid that here so we do avoid that and nobody bothers, if it's totally wrong we quietly move it without any fanfare.

Thank you RhiannOn and Khalan for the kind welcome.  RhiannOn, we have four cats at the moment, all 'rescued' ones.  We'd like to have a dog, too, but don't think the cats would be amused if we did.  I, too, remember being sad to lose my first horse in Oblivion, as I had become attached to him.  I certainly know what you mean about becoming fond of animals in games and it's lovely to meet someone else who feels the same.  I know it's daft, but they kind of become more than just pixels.

Khalan, I remember only too well the problems I used to have trying to get SoundBlaster to work in Dos.  I used to spend hours poring over computer mags, no internet in those days, trying to figure out how to make things work.  It was hard work, but I think we learned a lot.  My first real game was Ultima Underworld and I still remember how triumphant I felt when I finally got the sound configured and heard someone actually speaking.  Must have been about 1993 I think.  A lot of time has been wasted playing games since then.  Or not, depending on how you look at it.  Big Smiley Grin Laughing
