I have the US DVD version of DoD and I downloaded the Venice expansion from Gamersgate yesterday but I can't install it.    It gives me an error installing patch 1.  2 and then quits.    I looked in the temporary download files and the patches say Anno1404 instead of DoD and I can open the manual and it says Anno 1404 Venice instead of Dod as well.    If anyone has gamersgate version does this sound right?  Could I have the wrong version or something?  I can't get a response from the website.

(someone posted on gamersgate that he didn't think their version would work with the DVD original game - only their online version.   Does anyone know if this is true?  I hope I didn't waste my money.   I can't get reply from their support).

Thank you.

Yea you might be SOL, I think you need to have the original from the download service also... I know for a fact it is this way on steam.
Although you might be able to get a refund.  I have never dealt with gamersgate, so I can't be to sure.

Bummer.

So how the heck do you get the expansion if you have the DVD?  There is no DVD expansion released here in USA.

Well, now that I hear you can't really build Venetian cities, I think I'll be just as happy to get my money back if I can.

Thanks.

Bummer. ...

To use the old cliche, welcome to the wonderful world of downloading games.

Patches and/or updates (whatever they are called these days) are no longer just published and available.

It's like if you buy a Ford car, the only place you can get it fixed is at the dealer where you bought it -- even another dealer can't help you.

So if you have the DVD/disk/ whatever -- you have to go direct to the publisher for updates.

It's a mess unless you are in the computer business. I think about the "Star Trek" computer produced food -- "Tea, Earl Gray, hot" -- and consider slow starvation.

I finally got a response from gamersgate and they said I can't install the expansion from them to the CD version.   I'm a little ticked off.   Nowhere on the site did it say anything like that when I bought the game (and I've bought expansions for other games from them that worked just fine with my original CD versions like Europa Universalis and Imperium Romanum).   I told them I want a refund but I haven't heard back.

At this point, I feel ripped off on top of disappointed (I hear you can't even build a venetion city in the expansion) to the point I don't even want it anymore.   I hope they give me my money back.

If anyone else has this same problem - Gamersgate took a while to get back to me but they did gave me a refund no problem.

Maybe they will release a gold CD eventually and I'll pick it up.   I don't think I'll mess with the download thing again.

Try not to let one bad experience deter you from the "download" thing.  Once you really get into using one (or more) of the download services such as Steam, Gamersgate, or Impulse it really is convenient.  This was just a very unfortunate one time situation that could have been avoided if Gamersgate had posted that it would only work with their version of DOD like Steam posted and I think Impulse posted.

It's gotten to the point (around here anyway) where I wouldn't get most of the newer games if it were not for Steam and or to a lesser degree, Impulse as the local big box stores are and have been cutting their PC game inventory pretty drastically to the point where many of the types of games that I play (and I don't play first person shooters) aren't even being stocked on the shelves anymore at the big box stores like best buy, ebgames, gamestop etc.

I've really gotten quite used to buying digitally now and find it a tremendous convenience (most of the time).  I have to admit that for me Steam is the best as it has the largest selection, I haven't used gamersgate in a while because it's too slow, with speeds back at DSL (less than 80kb when my connection registers at 2.2mb) and their constant promises of putting mirrors in the North Americas so as to better serve their consumers over here (they've been saying that for a while now), and Impulse although I love Stardocks philosophy of DRM, their selection is far too limited at the moment, but getting better each month.

I can definately see the advantages of it, but I don't have a high speed connection at home.   I only resort to downloading when I really want something and can't get it at a store - but I need a service that is easy to download something at work and bring it home to install.   Steam is a pain in the ass as I have to bring my computer to work - and it won't let you even run a game once until you download hundreds of MB of patches and junk!

My biggest issue is the fear that one day I will want to play something and the website won't be available anymore to load my games.   I'd much rather have a CD I can install again 5 years from now.   EB games never carries pc stuff but the guys in there know me and can usually order a copy of anything I want (If they actually make cd versions which is not always the case anymore).

HI

I don't know if this is suitable, but you can order the dvd version here

http://www.mightyape.co.nz/product/PC-Games/Anno-1404-Venice-Expansion-Pack/3716456/

I've been buying my games from them for quite a while now and their service is excellent and they do handle overseas orders also.  They have daily "specials" which can be books games, dvd etc and is worth while to keep an eye on.  You will need to register first tho, but is easy process.

cheers
