I thought I would post this since I hate to see people miss a deal.  Today's date is 10/19/09 I'm not sure how long this deal will last at GamerGate.  At 120Kb it takes about 2 hours to download.  I just bought it couldn't pass it up at that price.  Happy Dance

Need to watch for Anno 1404 since I missed the last sale.  Sadness

If I put this in the wrong area mod away.  Questioning

Nice find.  If I didn't have it already I would have paid that for it.

I'm interested in hearing what you think of it after you've had time to try it out.  I've been trying to get into it, but Im feeling it's a bit shallow, but that could be that I'm simply not really fully into it yet and need to learn how to play better or more.

Do let us know how you like or dislike it after you've tried it out.

Thanks,

Oh and nice to know IM not the only person stuck at 122kb with gamersgate.  With Steam and Impulse I get on average 1.35MB/sec, with steam I get between 80kb and 120kb/sec.  Imgagine if you will that it took me over 24 hours (really) to download the sims 3 game.

Oh and it's ONLY $5.00 at Direct2Drive.com until this coming sunday.
DEAL IS OVER, IT WAS ONLY GOOD UNTIL THE SUNDAY AFTER I POSTED THIS MESSAGE.  SORRY IF YOU MISSED IT.
http://www.direct2drive.com/8231/product/Buy-East-India-Company-Download

I wish I had known about this sale before buying it.  Although I've sworn off using Direct2Drive.com for any more game purchases, for $5.00 I would have bought it anyway.  In my opinion, the game still needs a lot of work, like in the strategy screen the graphics look almost home made, when your ships should look like high detail replicas of how the ships look in the battle screens and the landmasses should use high res textures and don't even get me started on the ports, they look like a 5th grader created them, granted he would be a talented 5th grader though.  There is supposedly a major patch coming out in the next week sometime, although what it actually contains is anybody's guess.  I don't expect they are going to improve on the graphics, but maybe they'll add some new gameplay features and fix the bugs that are present.  Overall, it's got the ability to be a great game if they fix it up, and definitely worth the $5.00 to buy it from D2D.

This is a great buy for people who don't have it...I didn't get to really DIG into the game as Risen came out just as I was starting to build up my fleet....I think this game might be something I swim back to when I've had my fill of 'whatever else' I'm playing!  For me, a nice game to fall back on if my gaming gets stale!

I wish I had seen it on Direct to Drive at that price.   What a steal.   I bought the game to tide me over till Tropico 3 was released.   Then the jerks released it 5 days early the nerve of them.   What I did play of it was enjoyable.   The combat seemed real slow and sluggish.   These ships were capable of doing 10 to 25kpm yet the game hamstrings them at about 2 - 5 kpm.   For naval combat I would play Empire TotalWar hands down.

The game plays alot like Port Royal with nice and spiffy graphics.   The AI seems pretty good so far.

The things I do not care for.   Repairing ships, why is there not a repair whole ship button and a repair fleet button.   Load times when entering and exiting a port.   Also the placement of the exit port button right by the main info button for trade info.   I've hit the wrong button too many times making me stare at the loading screen 2 more times.   Clumsy trade info screens.   Would have it killed them to make a port clickable to see what they want rather than having to click on each exportable item and search the list of ports for the port your looking for.

Other than those things I feel it's a fun game.   Reminds me of a game I used to play on my NEC called Trade Winds or was it on my SNES.   Not sure as I was in my 20s and did a little too much drinking back then.    Ssssh..... Don't tell anybody

Is it $5 for the game, or is it $5 off of their regular price?  I went to the site, and it's showing "Light of Altair" as their "$5 Deal of the Week - Ends Sunday", and I see "East India Company" as $5 off of $29. 95 for a "Limited Time Only".

Is there a special offer I'm missing, or was it the $5 deal for last week, or is it the $5 deal for next week?

I much prefer economics over military, and my impression was "East India Company" emphasized combat, so I have so far avoided it . . .  but for $5 I'd have to pick it up.

Myself, I'm not sure I'm that interested in Tropico 3, so I dug out Tropico 2 to install and tinker with until I read more about what folks think of Tropico 3.   It will probably take glowing reports to sway me from the Anno series to the modern era, I'm more comfortable enjoying less smog.    :)

It WAS $5.00 for the game up until last sunday, since it's now tuesday, it's back up to regular price of $29.99

I tried really hard getting into Empire (bought it on Steam) but could never really figure out how to play it.  Not sure if I have the patience for learning it.  To me it's got the largest learning curve I've EVER seen in a game.  I like war games, I really do, but that kind of learning curve on my own just kills me.

Perhaps one day I'll find somebody that want to play and teach me at the same time, assuming there is a chat window or voice chat in Empires Total War.  Of course by the time I have time and find someone that wants to teach me, they won't be playing it anymore.

bUT YOU CAn still get it on gamersgate for $14.99 if you want it.  $5.00 was a tremendous price but $14.99 is still more than half off retail shops.

Very strange . . .  your post was just two days ago (Monday), so the following Sunday would be the 25th, which is four days from now . . .  it sounds like they must have changed their "$5 Deal of the Week" between Monday, when you saw it and posted about it, and today (Wednesday), when I went to check on it, to now be "Light of Altair" instead.

I actually have too many games that interest me more, already, but $5 seemed too good to pass up!

Hmmm your correct.  For some reason I thought I posted that on Saturday or Friday before that sunday.   Perhaps someone at direct2drive screwed up and put it up on sale for $5.00 and then realized what they had done.  I am quite certain that they did list it as $5.00 to buy it, not $5.00 off purchase price.

But since it doesn't seem to be listed now, I'll take the blame and say that I'm really going more blind than I thought that I was. (Although Im still 99% positive that I saw it showing me at $5.00 to buy the game).  Sorry for the confusion - Next time, Im definitely taking a snapshot of my window.

FWIW, I believe you saw what you thought you saw, that you are right, the change/error was on their side . . .  I would not be surprised if they mixed up their plans for this week and it was originally posted as their "$5 Deal" rather than "$5 Off", which was probably what they originally intended all along . . .  but it got posted up as the "$5 Deal" in error.

It was indeed too good to be true . . .  they didn't intend for it to be that great a deal!
