Thank you all for your kind replies - actually, CoconutKid it wasn't me who contacted Kalypso about the problem, it was a post I found on another forum where someone else had suffered the same nonsense and I was just reporting the reply he had been given.  Sorry if I didn't make it clear.  I found the post again, and to be honest I did have it slightly wrong -when they replied to this other guy, Kalypso didn't mention drm, I must have imagined that bit; what they said was that it must be a rare case of his dvd drive not being compatible with the game.  I think I imagined the drm bit because I know the problems it can cause.  In my case the dvd drive just won't see a disc in there - if I click on 'properties' for the drive while the disc is in there it prompts me to insert a disc, so it doesn't see it at all.  I put the disc in our main dvd player just to see if the disc was recognised as a dvd, and the player recognised it as a dvd immediately so I don't think it is a faulty disc.  My computer dvd drive has no problems with anything else, so there is something on this disc that the computer doesn't like.  I have googled about it extensively and apart from this one other person, no one else seems to have problems unless they bought the game online, when it seems drm is definitely screwing it up for some of them.  Even a patch wouldn't work in my case as I can't load the game in the first place! Anyway, it was very cheap so I won't grumble too much.  I might go with my original idea and get a new dvd drive as they are cheap now and I had been thinking of having two in my computer, one for Region 1 films, and there would be a good chance Tropico Reloaded would work with a different one.  Thanks for all your help.

RhiannOn, I should have said in my last post that your idea is brilliant - I wish I had thought of doing what you did with your old computer.  Actually my husband is thinking of building a pc for himself, on which we will put my no longer used copy of XP and an older graphics card, as he only wants it for Flight Sim 2004, so I'm sure I will manage to get some of my older games working fine on that.  I'll have to bully him into getting on with it  Big Smiley Grin Laughing.  Thanks for your helpful suggestions.  I'll get Tropico working one way or another before too long.

I'll be awaiting the latest news flashes!  Smiley Blink wink

All this hassle with a reissue of an old, old timer makes one wonder about the drm on T3 with its serial number registration and on-line connection to get patches, etc.   Questioning  Questioning  Soapbox Speech with tape across mouth

I bought tropico reloaded and when I insert the disc to install I get an alert from my webroot spysweeper saying that it contains a virus named mal generic a. I emailed Kalypso and they said this happnens occationally [sic]. I don't trust them. Has anyone else heard of this or had this happen?

I am quite surprised. Does anyone have words of wisdom on this sort of stuff?

Words of wisdom, it does happen from time to time, it's simply called a false positive when it turns out to not reallly be a virus or malware.  What the person should do is to simply send the file that is causing the alert to his anti virus developer to have them test the file and if it's a false positive which I suspect it is, they will update their antivirus software to make it stop flagging the alert on the file.

He can trust them or not, but I don't suspect that they would purposely (or not scan their own stuff) put something into reloaded disk that would be harmful to their consumers computers, if they had done it, there would be a lot more hub bub about it than the occasional person that is probably using some offbrand or overly sensitive anti virus program.

I'm always amazed when one or two people get an alert on a piece of software and the other 50,000 users don't, but yet the 2 that do, think for sure that somebody is out to get them.

You are correct that it is too easy to be paranoid about how stupid commercial vendors can be. The large part of the problem is when a person mistakes broad-based stupidity for targeted malice.

In the instant case, I suspect E. Sterling simply is not knowledgeable about how anti virus programs work (me too), so he considers them to be magic "black-boxes" which are perfect and other software vendors are very "un-perfect."

An illustration of how imperfect vendors may be was on ABC Network News last night. The USDA beef inspection does nothing about meat ladened with chemicals (such as pesticides) even when the inspectors know about it. Mexico has refused to allow US beef entrance because of chemical contamination but the same product was sold freely in the US.

Apparently the chemicals came with the cow and were not added as part of slaughtering and processing the meat -- so they are O.K.

Transfer the thought to the software world, and it's not the virus that kills you, but rather the pesticide - aka anti virus.

I returned the game to the vendor and they sent me another. The new one does the same thing. So I think it's unlikely a real virus would be on two consecutive copies. I sent an email with the name of the virus to webroot and they sent me a generic answer without addressing my issue directly. You're probably right, I doubt Kalypso would intentionally put malware in thier product then lie about it. However I would hate to ruin my pc for a ten dollar game. I guess I'll knock on wood and hope Kalypso is right.

Perhaps he\she is not such a "cracker" after all.

Looking around cautiously

That's the funny part!  If it was a virus or not, it would still be on all the copies since they are all printed from the same master, so what is on one, would be on all of them.  oh well, at least he's not so paranoid that he won't install it.

Ruin his pc, snarf, rofl, snarf.  Antivirus are not only good to prevent viruses from getting on our computers, they are also good to remove them, but maybe this person didn't know that.
