Congrats.

I've got the last RC candidate installed on it's own drive and was testing it out.  I guess it's good until March or April 2010.  Though I've not installed much into it, I dont know how convinced I am at this point to upgrade to windows 7 from Vista.

I'm sure many will disagree and think the exact opposite but it seems to me that Windows 7 is more like an interim stopover from Vista to the next greatest release.  I know of some folks that said that Vista was like windows ME and just an interim product but I guess I've gotten so used to Vista now that it seems full candidate operating system to me.

I'll likely upgrade to 7 at some point I imagine but Im in no great hurry to jump the vista ship just yet.  It serves me pretty well.  However I do like some of the new features of 7, just maybe not enough yet to really jmp ship.

Idk somthing about windows 7 had me when I installed the beta the first time... I guess I like the interface and the new taskbar... so far everything is going great,, boot and shut down speeds are great.  I have not installed any games yet... just getting the essentials back online.

In reality I didn't need to upgrade, but I guess there is a difference between needing to and wanting... Just like I dont need NHL 10 which comes out (today actually) but after my class gets over at 10, ill be at best buy getting the game I have been wanting for the last 3 months :P

Hopefully I run into no compatibility issues, ill let you guys know.

I've been running the beta and then the RC for quite a while now, and I've had no compatibility problems, even with older games.  Running 64-bit as well, and no driver problems.  This is definitely the time to switch to 64-bit in my opinion, if you haven't already.  It's going to be absolutely necessary in the coming years to be able to access more than 3.5GB RAM for future games.

CB, there's a platform update coming out for Vista to add some of the features that Windows 7 has, including ribbon interfaces and DirectX11.  Check it out here:

Ya... I thought about it, but opted 32-bit... I even got 6gb ram in my comp... half wasted :/ Oh well 64-bit is still growing, so ill probably make the switch when it is completely necessary, or it looks like I wont run into problems with older software... there are a few older games I still like to play, like age of empires ii (conquerors expansion).

My processor died and I got a new computer with Windows 7. So far, I am striking out on loading and playing most of my older games. Even CivCity Rome quits during the very first game screen as you try to add the first work center. Changing it to compatibility with win XP service pack 2 or 3 does not help. I guess I have lost them all and will have to wait until newer more compatible games come out.

Have you installed DirectX 9 alongside DX10?  They will work alongside each other, and DX9 is necessary for many games.  Also in the compatibility screen, try disabling desktop composition and visual themes for games that still won't work.

I am sometimes technically slow. How do you install direct x 9 next to DX 10? Also, I seem to have direct x 11. What is desktop composition and visual themes and how do I disable it? I thought I could install something called windows xp virtual, but it seems that that needs windows 7 professional for $200 more, and I have windows 7 home premium.

The virtual xp is slow.  I was running it when I had the beta of 7 and i wouldn't try playing games through it.  You just need to download the latest DirectX 9 and install it, that's all that Khalan means about installing 9 next to 10.  Or find one of your older games that has a directx folder and see if it's got 9 in that folder and install it from that.  Check the civcity rome discs to see if it's got a directx folder it is likely to be 9

Long time no see.

Tried the direct x thing. No dice. Civ City just doesn't want to run for me any more.  Crying Maybe I can find someone with an old computer for sale so I can run my games again.

And nice to see you CB!
