Well said and it does sound oh so familiar now doesn't it.  What a shame.

I really wouldn't mind a real City Building MMO, one that is truly something beyond simple trading (which is a griefers paradise unless they add more checks into the current system) and a chat box.  I'd even pay a subscription for one that is truly interactive amongst the players.  But this thing, well.... I really don't say it very often, but it appears to me that it's got Failure written all over it's forhead.

Really, I can't imagine them being able to pull this out of the frying pan, I think they'll sell some copies off the shelves based on the pretty box, and to those people that don't read any reviews or do any homework on the games before they buy them, but I think they've pretty much alienated the majority of their key consumer by this point.  The demo really isn't getting any great rave reviews by other city builders across all the forums that I've read.  The most glowing review it got was in the early days when Dirk over at Simtropolis (I think it was Dirk) got to go to MC's headquarters to check out the game.  Now that the demo is out, the player reviews of it are less than stellar, with a great deal of people saying they'll pass on picking this one up.

That's got to hurt over at MC I would think, to know that a portion of your player base has pretty much packed your title in already before it's even hit the shelves.

Heh,

I just wanted to edit my above post to apologize just in case the parallels to Hellgate: London have been noticed an been described by others on these boards.    Also, I might have jumped to conclusions, but the more I read over at simtropolis, it seems that all this is exactly on point.

The original quote about the announcement that mass transit  (apart from buses) was only to be in the Planet Offer is very telling.

To MC's credit: ambition is needed in these sorts of projects.

At the root of it developers need to create something that they can pull off and that people will actually buy.    The bar is sitting pretty high with city builder games when you want or need to improve on the Sim City line.

This is all guesswork, but there might have been a deparate shift in direction (to MMO-like multiplayer) when they learned that surpassing Sim City in simulation quality and building options (Mass Transit indeed) wasn't in their budget or skills.    Too bad they're seeming to fail at the multi-player part as well.   .   .

Ane beyond the whole pay for mass transit fiasco, they still have some problems in the game that can't be "fixed" according to MC.  Now it's not broken but it's the way it's designed, what I'm speaking of is that every building has the same footprint.

So all this hullabaloo about beautiful curved roads doesn't mean a whole hill of beans when you go to place buildings along that nice curved road (of which the only "beautiful curved roads I've seen in the demo are really large radius'ed curves, those are reasonably smooth, but for roads with a tight radius they aren't very smooth or beautiful), ummm, where was i... Oh, so trying to place these 1" square footprinted buildings along a curved road just doesn't work, they look like schnitzel.  Then they tell us they can't have buildings with different sized footprints due to performance issues.  So that's just the way it's gonna be, every building has the same sized plot of land and it makes the game look really artificial, and guarantee my SimCity 4 cities look much more natural using the NAM plugins to give me some curvey roads and better roads overall.

I really wanted CXL to fill that gap that nothing else has been able to fill since SimCity 4 for me in modern era CB games, but I guess it's just not meant to be.  Who knows what the next 5 years will bring however.

I honestly don't expect EA to ever produce a real SC5 as theres just no way they can compete with a game that has already had 7 or however many years of people producing plugins to add to the cities.  Theres just no way they can compete with that.

Much like Simcity Societies, I dont' think that MC should have ever tried to say they were going to try to be the new cornerstone in city building games and try to put themselves in the same class as SimCity 4, it's impossible for them to compete with a product with so much free content, just impossible at this point.  They should have just labeled themselves another modern era city building game and not made any references to SimCity games, that I believe has and will have done them the most harm when people understand that they really can't compete for whatever reason, lack of funds, or lack of talent or todays technology not being capable yet to really do a Simcity Killer game.
