I may be reading WAY too much into this blog, but there are some real storm clouds on the horizon of this game if I'm right...OR MC needs someone with a better handle on any and all language skills to write their blogs because THIS one is either REAL BAD news or REALLY poorly written:

http://www.citiesxl.com/index.php?/content/view/78/63/lang,en/

Things that worry me on first read:  They seem to be WAY TOO IMMERSED on the MMO aspect of this...while I like the idea of a persistent online world that you can check in and out of, the idea of playing a city builder in multi player mode makes me laugh my butt off in concept alone...

Second, only 25 maps?  NO terraforming?  No regions?  Look, I'm not a big fan of SimCity 4, but what i DID like about that game wasn't the darned zones, it was the ability to make my own world w/ the terraforming tools and the way to interact w/ different regions...

Third, content updates ONLY free to monthly World subscribers?  ARE THEY STUPID?

Look, in the back of my mind, I always feared what this game could devolve into given MC's total lack of support for Medieval Lords....

My reservations are growing and this game went from TOPS on my upcoming games list to third, behind Anno 1404 and Tropico 3...

pat!

That doesn't look too good, Crying.    I hope they change their minds about the d/l content for single player. Reminds me of Windows live  Flaming Mad in someways.  The content should be available for ALL players.

Yep, anno's not far away and tropico 3  later  Happy Dance

I think Anno's what, a July release maybe?  SWEET!

As for CXL, well, I think that Monte Cristo has officially blown it...too bad, they were on the right track and then got sidetracked by mindless populism....

From day one we wanted to make sure that we were going to compete with the most ambitious builders out there in term of content and functionality.  We wanted players to first enjoy Cities XL in solo mode, and then convince them to join the Planet Offer, which will open the gates to a more ambitious level of game experience.

I would not worry about the maps and terriforming.  If your computer can hold the rest of the stuff for "solo mode", you can run a wargame down to the infantryman level for Afganistan.  The MMO could run a wargame for all the Chinese Military down to the infantryman's family level.

That has to be simply hype composed of a list of the dreams of all the "wish-lists" ever posted.  Even Nevada "Chicken Ranches" don't make such outlandish claims, and the miracle pill outfits warn against four hour erections.

CK:  What really has me worried is the lack of focus MC seems to be putting on the single player mode, which was to be the HEART of the game up until the past couple months...

...and I personally despise MP builder games...

Agreed, city builders seem to be one of the least suitable game genres for multiplayer.  Hopefully the single player aspect hasn't suffered.

I have to admit, when I first heard about CitiesXL, I was excited.  But as with some others here, the more and more I heard about it, the more disappointed I became.  This whole MMO push is just way beyond me.  It's a city builder, and while people who build cities enjoy sharing their handiwork and creativity with others, does it really lend itself to a persistant world/subscription model?  I don't think so, but I'm a very small voice in the universe....

The whole blueprint aspect, available online only, seems like quite the ripoff for those who are only interested in SP, and not the MMO aspect.  I really like the line "* All Buildings, Maps, simulation and functionality upgrades are free with the planet offer"  So for those who choose not to subscribe to their online offer, too bad... no updates for you... Unless you pay for them... muaaaahahahahahahaaaaaa

Ok, got a bit manic there towards the end... Either way, I'm severly disappointed with MC.

Totally agree Wizaerd...frankly, I think we will see the end of MC as a viable developer w/ this horrible move...too bad, actually, but if they can't see the insanity of their decision, well...then that's what happens...I have to tell you I'm also worried a bit about Tilted Mill right now w/ their focus on the low-scale/old school/zero graphics RTS type games....

I agree pat, I avoided the Hinterland game because it's just not something I was too interested in, as well as Mosbey's Confederate (I think that's what it was called)...  Why the decided to push games out similiar to an Indie developer is a bit of a mystery.  not that there's anything wrong with Indie developers, or even Indie games, I just didn't expect Tilted Mill, a proven game developer to switch tactics like that.

Hopefully these small quick games are funding a much bigger, more mainstream game that they're being overly secretive about...
