Seems like some hard core SimCity fans are at least intrigued by this game...which at least we can hope that they won't spend all their time flaming against it...some positive signs on this one!

pat!

It all sounds simply fascinating.

Other than the GEMS which still concern me about how MC might try to keep out some core gameplay that we've become accustomed to, so that it can be added later as a GEM.  Or even the value of a GEM that becomes needed for core gameplay according to the community.

But other than that and my cheapness and desire not to pay a "couple of bucks" a month for the online part of the game, it all sounds like it's really shaping up nicely.

Thanks for the linky Pat, I wo  [keyboard died momentarily]

I would never have found that on my own since Im trying to avoid too much information on Cities XL to avoid pregame burnout, but that article was just enough to sort of quench my desire to know at least some of the things like the road system and that there will be zoning.

I have to tell you this is the next big game for me.  I'm playing some free build in GAR, tried Sins of a Solar Empire (very hard game...not 'quite' my style as an RTS) and SPORE (ummm...okay...cute but.....) and am back to trying The Guild 2: Venice w/ the new patch and really REALLY thinking of just diving back into the BttR Sovereign!  So yeah, I'm at a place where THIS game is what I'm definitely waiting for...I think GAR will hold my attention for a while, but this can't come soon enough!

I've been playing a lot of Magic the Gathering Online (the collectible card game) and it's been holding my interest more than any other game ever has (other than Diablo II and World of Warcraft) and in the past 7 days since getting it, I've stayed up 24 hours , many many nights thus far to build another deck of cards to try to beat my opponents of which there are usually at least 1,000 people online playing.  It's highly addicting with the strategy of what works and what doesn't and then throw in the random draw of cards.  Although Cities XL is at the top of my list of games to buy (actually, its the only one at the moment), it's going to be hard to tear me away from MTGO right now, but perhaps I'll tire of MTGO by the time that they release Cities XL.

Personally I like the idea of GEMs, as I enjoy playing tycoon games as well.  But I agree, it's not going to be good if GEMs form part of the core gameplay.

If they do stick to strictly optional modules, such as the ski resort management and similar things, I think it's a great idea.  It sounds a bit like being able to drive vehicles in the Sim City 4 Rush Hour expansion; it's not necessary to the main game but it's a diversion that occasionally rewards the player.
