Okay while cruizing Impulse (stardock) today looking for an inexpensive diversion I ran across the following:

Nemesis of the Roman Empire $14.99 Add To Cart

In the height of its glory Carthage was the greatest power in the ancient world. With trade routes throughout the entire Mediterranean, there were hardly others to dispute its strength. Goods, gold and slaves poured into the majestic city – the source of its might. Countless mercenaries armies were constantly bought to ensure that all who threatened Carthage or its interests would be dealt with. However, another Empire was also on the rise. The city of Rome too had begun to gain strength, and soon decided to openly challenge their Carthaginian rivals. The time of the Punic Wars had begun.

 Features
Two new nations: the Carthaginians and the Iberians, complete with their own historical buildings and units (War Elephants, Libyan Infantry, Numidian riders, Slingers, Mountaineers, three new catapult models). The handling of every nation is completely different.
A single-player campaign featuring the campaign of Hannibal Barca (Sagunto battle, the crossing of the Alps, Cannas battle).
A single-player campaign featuring the development of the Roman Republic during the Punic wars (the invasion of Sicily, the conquest of Hispania, the destruction of Carthage).
Completely new terrains, now including desert and custom maps.
Players can choose their race while playing on custom maps and the game modifies the map to fit the stronghold they've chosen.
New unit specials including regeneration (units heal faster and eat more food), bleeding attack (in addition to its normal attack the unit takes 10% off the enemy health), rage (the unit increases its damage spending its own health) and full armor (reduces the damage from all attacks).
New ways to obtain resources and new upgrades including additional options for the Gaul and Roman nations.
Dozens of additions to the CK engine: automatic training of warriors, capturing of supply mules, aimed arrow shooting from towers and more.

 System Requirements
Minimum:
Microsoft Windows XP
400 MHz Processor
128 MB Available System Memory
DirectX 8.1
1.5 GB Available Hard Drive Space
 Recommended:
600 MHz Processor
196 MB Available System Memory

Impulse Requirements:
Windows XP/Vista
Internet Explorer 7.0
Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0
Athlon/Pentium III (1GHz or higher)
512MB RAM
1GB HD space recommended

===============================================

So what year did this actually get released?  Since it requires Windows XP, it can't be more than about what 11 years old, and only requires a 400MHz processor, which would actually make it more in the timeframe of windows 98 to me.

Has anybody actually heard of this or have it?

I mean really now, DirectX 8.1?  Thumbs Down Looking at what I would term primitive GUI  Looking around cautiously , this is probably one of those diversion games that has to hit the Impulse bargain bin at $4.99 or less (like one of their fantasy card games did last month) before it's a value to buy.  $19.99 for a DirectX 8.1 game seems a bit steep, especially when it's a digital distrubution game, so developers and publishers have no costs associated with printed manuals, physical CD's, Box Art and the box itself for that matter.  Disagreeing Madly

Well games shouldn't be priced based on the DirectX version they use :-)

But it should be priced lower, I agree.  We (Haemimont) don't decide the pricing even at release, even less six years after.

It's a really old, purely 2D game, it's from 2003.  It's a pure RTS, with zero city/base-building.  There should be a demo somewhere to try it out.
It's the second in the series that started with Celtic Kings; the third is much, much better than the first two (while retaining its shameful DirectX 8. 1-ness), but unfortunately it was never released outside of Spain and Italy.

Well i have to make my comment here:

Nemesis of the Roman Empire is imho one of the 5 best RTS games EVER MADE! The first game i played from Haemimont was Celtic Kings: Rage of War which has the same engine but less detailled (when i saw the box i had initially the same thoughts as you do) but it got me hooked (fantastic and very long adventure). I have to say that, even if i love the third one (spanish version), my favorite of the 3 is still Punic Wars aka Nemesis of the Roman Empire. While the price is still high, it's WORTH it. If you like a game with focus on tactics and roman history with a strong AI, don't hesitate.

You can find a demo here (left side):

Cheers

PS: my avatar is from the third game.  Wink Wink

Hi again Assen,

I guess Im really rather suprised that your company doesn't have a hand in determining the price with digital retail sales.

Celtic Kings I might actualy have in one of the big boxes of games in the garage, the name is very familiar, however this one never popped up on my radar even when I was at my height in games with over 350 games in my collection.

Thanks Anguille for the link to the demo, I've downloaded it and will give it a go and see how it is and see if it triggers my memory any of celtic kings.

I found another game at the best buy when I went down there today called Fate, it comes with it's expansion pack in one box for $19.99 and is also an older game from what I understand, and is a total Diablo II clone except the eye candy isn't nearly as nice but it has a certain charm and I wouldn't hesitate recommending it to anybody that likes this sort of game as a diversion from any main stream games they might be playing.  While people can buy it online digitally from wild tangent I don't recommend that as they charge $19.99 for the game and another $19.99 for the expansion, while in the retail stores it's $19.99 for both.

I really never had time to get into it.  What with work, life and Rockband 2 (I like to drum) on the xbox 360, I just havn't had more than a few minutes to try it and it would be an unfair judgement for the game on my part.  I think the line in Lord of the Rings expresses how I feel at the moment: "I feel like butter spread too thin on toast" with just too much to do lately to do anyone thing for very long.

I must say that the graphic detail in this game, being 2D and six years old, is exceptional.  My question for those who have played it:  Would you compare it to: Age of Empires? Stronghold? Anything at all?

Just curious, because if I can find it anywhere cheaper, it'd be a nice diversion for sure...

later,
pat!

Honestly, I'd likely wait until Impulse throws it up on sale for only $5.99 like they do every now and then with the lower priced games, since it's $14.99 full price with Impulse, I wouldn't be suprised to eventually get that "sale" email that they send out every now and then with it listed at $5.99 or $7.99 at which point I'd buy it as I know I could get $5.99's worth of entertainment out of it.  But with it being old now, (hence old game mechanics, visuals etc), I'd be hard pressed to give up the $15.00 that they currently have it listed at.

Yeah I know, 15 dollars isn't much, but 3x15 is the price of G.A.R.

Nemesis is really unique in it's approach....there are only 2 ressources, gold and food. You capture villages and cities...no building at all. The maps are fairly big with unlimited number of units (yep...unlimited). Leaders are very important...you can send 50 soldiers to a leader and they will adopt a formation and get bonus depending on the experience of your leader...you work with divisions (not sure if it's the right name) more than with single units (which you could if you really really wanted but it's not recommended).
The game is all about tactics and warfare....very good ai....very good game.... Sticking Tongue Out

I'd buy it again at full retail price if i had to...

Cheers
