I'm really rather suprised that there isn't more banter about this upcoming title.  Everytime that I get one of their newsletters it makes me sit up and definitely take notice of what MonteCristo is up to.

Some pics of Cities XL for windows and some news:

Think massive, think online, think CITIES XL™

Monte Cristo is pleased to announce CITIES XL™ for Windows today. In this next-generation take on the city building genre, realism will be pushed to the limit with cities that are bigger, more realistic and more sophisticated than ever before. CITIES XL™ will expand upon all the features that make city builders fun and interesting, while also letting players take their game online, as they interact with others in a massive online environment.

CITIES XL™ allows gamers to develop cities on realistic 3D maps using an incredible collection of unique structures and monuments based on American, Asian and European-influenced architectural styles. The maps feature a variety of environments: mountains, hills, canyons, beaches and islands, all set in different climates from tropical to desert, Mediterranean to temperate. Players must create the right combinations of social services, leisure activities, special events and other job opportunities within their cities in order to feed, clothe, employ and entertain their citizens. Be it planning and building a new zoo, public park, residential neighborhood or transit system - there's always a fresh and exciting challenge for would-be city managers and mayors in CITIES XL™.

“We believe that the level of detail and realism brought to CITIES XL™ answers the needs of city-builder fans,” said Jérôme Gastaldi, COO of Monte Cristo. “We believe fans of the genre will definitely enjoy CITIES XL™ and many of those fans have provided us with feedback on our development so far. We are really proud to have such a cool and proactive community.”

The game’s online features and services will allow players to create interconnected cities on virtual and persistent planets. Mayors can share and trade with one another, specialize their economy and team up with befriended cities to create sprawling metropolises. Life on the planet will be punctuated by events and competitions - a concert held in one town may, for example, be attended by visitors from other areas who can also enjoy a walk around the city to admire the urban creations of multiple players. By combining a fantastic single-player game with the social and multiplayer aspects of an MMO, CITIES XL™ will shape the future of the genre by offering more variety, bigger cities and multiple gameplay layers.

For more information about CITIES XL™, which will ship in 2009, please join the continuously growing community at www.citiesxl.com

Nope, had a discussion started a couple a month ago...

Cities XL discussion

I hope Monte Cristo can find a way to make this one work. The screens look nice..and I can understand why many SimCity players might be attracted to this one.   wink

I can't see anybody that really likes city building games of the more modern age not liking this one.  It seems to pretty much going to cover all it's bases and the only problems that I can see so far with it, is that its going to be a little piggy with the system resources.  I don't think it's an "if" they can make it work anymore now that they've officially announced it as CitiesXL "for Windows".  I think it's a done deal however some games as we know have fallen through when they were just about to go to printing.

Well for the record I wasn't referring whether MC will release the game.. with their track record ..and I go back to Czar...is whether the game will be in major need of immediate patching.  I sure hope not..as we do need a builder of some sort...  I have mixed feelings over some of the directions Devs have "modernized" City Builders..since the reduced the game management responsibilities that older CB games offered and streamlined them in to visual arenas with dumbed down AI and not much for the player to do..other than watch the scenery.  Gladly the Guild II did manage to invoke more and with it's Patrician III backdrop..turned out to be a wonderful game where the player is totally involved in every aspect of gameplay.

I do wish all the best for this one.. online Interactivity isn't all that alluring..but it really depends on the gameplay..the FUN.. that's the thing that snags hardcore citybuilders.   Smiley Blink

I think it's just become a fact of our PC gaming life now.  When a game is released many times there is already a patch available, I have to assume that it holds the stuff they couldn't get into the game while under the deadlines of their publishers so they continued working after they shipped the game to meet the deadline and put out the remainder in a patch.

However, with a game of this seeming magnitude, I would have to assume that a patch will be needed, I think this is a major undertaking for MC.  I'm only with them since the game Political Tycoon, I don't remember Czar.

I followed this one as long as i could but I'm just not seeing any movement towards MC getting it done.  Do we have a release date yet?  anything other than graphic renderings?  I think this game, in theory, has the chance to be flat out superb.  I'm hopeful that MC can pull it off...I for one will play it IF they ever get it done.

For now..I'm going to stick with my comments I made when I started a thread on the game back in April..  IF any other Dev was involved I'd feel more at ease..and I realize that's being pretty liberal with my opinion... Laughing

Like Pat ...it's the "Ifs" that need to be resolved.. and I'll be the first to give out kudos once they are deserved.  This Publisher Dev policy of sending games to us to endure an unfinished product..is really insane.  So my personal resolve on this one is to wait until Monte Cristo delivers a game without major issues...which I foresee as several inevitable patches into the future.   Sticking Tongue Out ..so I'll just wait it out until that time arrives.

If that's right then yeah I guess theres no need to get excited just yet.  I do have to wonder though I look in their forums and see many people that are very very regular users and are in high anticipation of the game.  I wonder if being in high anticipation of a game for so long, and being fed regular updates on the games progress doesn't make them feel rather burned out on the game before they even play it.

I know there was a game a few years ago (rails across America) which I still recommend to people if they can find a copy, it's a lot of fun, anyway, me being the ultra nerd that I am, I was following it's progress quite closely for more than a year before release.  Finally the game was released and I rushed down to buy a copy and you know what?  I was already burned out on the game just by talking about it for a year.  Now, I wasn't trying to drum up that kind of anticipation with Cities XL or anything, I guess I just didn't cruise around my own site enough to see that people had already talked about the game and moved on.

So my apologies for bringing it up again.
