I've only so far found a way to demolish business's that I create I am hoping IM just overlooking the possibilitiy of selling any business that I build like we can in The Guild.  Is this possible, or can I only demolish the ones that I no longer want?

Thanks

Businesses can be demolished..shutdown and sold at Auction CB.  It all depends on what your strategy is..  Demolishing you lose the investment and put all those workers in the beggar lines..looking for handouts from the Church.

There's a Cost of operation..so you can reduce the amount of Labor costs by cutting back ..using the business UI to make this selection... example: 30 workers cut to 15 is 50% *duh*.. but the bad thing is the business tax stays the same.  So you've just cut back on Labor and the amount of product you can produce.

Then if you are a member of the Guild..in the same town where you've built a business..you can Auction off businesses and..also Ships you no longer need.  It Costs a membership fee to Join.. so be prepared for that.  Also some Towns do not have a Guild Building, thus in these towns think long and hard whether you want to build there.

As the game becomes more familiar, you'll see the pros and cons of running Industries.  For example..I rarely build a Saltworks..because I can always find Salt cheap in Towns that produce it.. and other products work the same way.  It'll take a few games to narrow these out..and apply them to whatever way you've planned out in amassing your fortunes.

To preserve your Cash..it is best to plan ahead..I realize in learning the game a lot of trial an error occurs.. I did my time with that too.  I just don't want you to become overwhelmed with things that you'll eventually avoid once you see how the game works.  wink

How do you know how much your business is making?  It shows me clearly how much the taxes are, but if I keep a business supplied in it's require items and full labor, how much does it make?  For example a cattle farm that I just built, the town has hardly any meat yet nobody buys my meat from my trade house (I have an administrator there that is supposed to be selling my meat and leather down to 0 but nobody buys it so I just continually lose money from taxes, this last game that I just tried, I think was a worlds record.  I was broke within 30 minutes tops.

How do you know how much your business is making?

(click on the pile gold coins top of your screen UI..this brings down a Ledger sheet)

Each business has all the cost of supplied materials and labor costs tallied to show what your Operation cost will be.  Then your City tax is added to that.

With only ONE business it is possible you are producing very expensive meat.  (with meat you need salt and grain)..  so if your purchased these at good bargin prices..then your meat will cost less for you to make it.  Meat sells well if you can produce it for under 1000 gold.. 900 would be even better.  as it can be sold in most ports for 1100+ most of the time.  The bad thing is the Consumption of Meat in all the Towns is easily saturated as it doesn't take big inventories to satisfy a town.

(The best product to see how this works is you Iron works.. buy cheap Pig Iron and convert it Iron and there's a constant need in all Towns because it is a Primary Building requirement.)

There's a Bonus with having Multiple businesses..(the matrix is 3) so if you had Three of these ranches..then the volume would run the product cost down.. and you'd have a more profitable product to sell.

But realize this is a major business venture..working up to that much investment early in the game.  So the numbers you need to look at are the Cost of your product and how much it is worth.. if you are making 2000 gold meat..it won't sell well in a 1100 gold meat market.   Smiley Blink

Do you have to be part of that expensive guild to be able to sell your business, or am I missing something?

P.S. Thanks for all the information Max.

Thumbs Up  hehe You and I both know pat could reveal much about this game if he wasn't so wrapped up in Oblivion... wink

Yes you have to belong to the Guilds to have the privileges of buying and selling through the Auction.  They do become more expensive as you rise in social stature so I join at least two when you can afford it... you will have to join at least 5 to guarantee your successful journey to becoming Mayor.

Your reputation is gauged and created in all the towns you interact with..you can become Councillor in all the towns over time..plus be Mayor of your Home town and Hold the Office of Alderman.  This translates into lots of votes in every Town Hall meeting..and getting your way..thus controlling the Hansa Empire pretty much.  But to get there takes time and vigilance on your part.  (side note: some towns will like you so much their lil peeps will be saying you could be Lord Mayor there..now that having a great reputation..is it not?)

Once you get traderoutes bringing in a good amount of cash.. then the things you need to buy, join..etc will be less of a hassle.  I have one trade route that brings in 150K a week.. So in a few years you can amass quite a bit of wealth..doing what the game is all about..trading.   Smiley Blink  Somewhere along the line I suppose you'll be intersted in some of the games "special features" ... that have been discovered.  <teaser statement>  hehe

PS..did you ever find your manual...  Laughing

Hello and Welcome That's great to know CB! The version that I just got says that a full map and an English version of the user manual is included on my CD.  I'll check tonight.

I'm assuming that replacementdocs would perhaps have manuals for other games also...that will be a great resource to alot of our members.

Yes they are, I found them when I inserted the CD into the drive. they for some reason don't install on the hard drive.  The PDF that is on the CD is identical to the one I downloaded from replacement docs which is an indispensible site for lost manuals.

I will say however that the printed map (printed from the image on the cd (which is in pdf format) is not usable, it's only usable on the screen where you can zoom in on it to see what the icons are at each port.  I know, I printed it and wasted some ink on it. Laughing
