Hello and Welcome  Hi Taz... I had you in mind when I offered.  I'm hoping that you can find some relaxation and good healthy mental exercises with this game.

My only only problem with it is you need to read the Letters and announcements it presents.  So my eyes get weary long before I'm tired of playing.

Some of the ingenuity of the gameplay is deceptive..and I think that is why pat and I feel the game is "deeper" than most.. as a player has to establish how he/she is going to approach the game and the common goal of being the richest and most powerful trader in the Hansa.  As you will always have upstart competitors and old time foes who want to knock you out of the picture.

Here's a list of game play Events that need to be honed and polished over several games. Because unless you manage to save and go back ..wrong decisions have to be either lived with for the balance of that particular game.  So here's a starter List for those players who are playing as newbies..  wink ..Aah me.. I recall when I was in that position very well.

1) Making a profit..
2) Trade route selections
3) Popularity contest
4) How to "deal" with Pirates
5. Spending cash on the City
6. Loans, Bribes and Assignments
7. When and IF to Marry.. you be the Judge
8. Acquiring Captains..(should #2 on the list)
9. When and what to Build as a business ..where?  (pat is great at this facet)
10. Tricks to winning the Favorite town Son award.. (which gets you up the political ladder)

That should be a good list to start with..the refinement of options and offering from the Alderman.. what type of Ships to buy and sell and Convoy to other parts of the World.  The game offers endless tweaks to what you might enjoy doing with your preferred gameplay style.   Smiley Blink

Please keep us posted..  wink

Are there automatic trade routes?  For example if I want to buy salt from somewhere and bring it home to supply my fisheries, is that possible to do or must i manually take charge of a ship to go and buy a load of salt and bring it back?

For auto trade routes you need to hire a Captain..and they are found in the Taverns.  I usually check where they are when I make my first manual pass through the ports.  If I find a Good one with Trading skills..their number are listed (0-0-2) for example.. the first number is Fighting ability..the middle is Seamanship (speed and maneuvering) and the last is Trading skills.,which translates that he can buy at a discount..where you cannot. ( for example: as his trade number varies 0-5) he can buy items 5% less on ALL goods..which in turn more than pays his wages.  Thus the reason I find a Captain early..to get my cash flow going..

I always start the game with Two ships for this reason too.  You will need one for yourself and soon as you can..build another ship to bump up the load capacity of your convoy.  I'm assuming you've noted how to equip your ships with weapons so they qualify for Convoy status.  wink

nO,
i ONLY got the pdf manual tonight/this morning so I just read that I can have a captain and that it's a requisite for auto trade routes, which is what I need.  I absolutely hate physically moving my ships around from port to port trying to find a port that sells cheap and others that sell high, Im much more interested in somehow improving the town and working my way up the ladder of success in my city and making it grow somehow.

So, now I know how to find the captain (Thank you), but I was looking at my ship this morning and see that it has like 4 cannons on it, but nothing seems to be clickable so the only guess I can make on this subject is to take it into the dock repair station and see if they can refit it with some more weapons.

Thumbs Up Yes... that's the ticket.  I don't like to sail manually either. I do for searching out Captains and visiting Guild houses if there's a ship being Auctioned off.. that's a hoot sometimes.

Focusing on your Home town is the first priority..click what the people are saying about you.  They will hint about what you need to do ..so your reputation improves.  Take Baths every 3 weeks minimum.. or you lose stature if you forget.

Hang on... the shipyard can upgrade your ship if it isn't capable of housing weapons.

You have to Buy the weaponry yourself.  Click on the Town docks like you do for trading goods..there a selection to switch views (listed as Weapons) so you see your Ships available slots for Catapults and Spears...  Bombards and Cannons will show up if you keep building ships and the town grows in status..so does the higher tech weapons.  hehe
