Hi Guys and Gals,
First off I just want to say thank you to all of you for all the help, not only those of you that did physical help towards getting the new site up and running but those that offered suggestions, or recommendations, observations and basically helped me to keep my sanity.

I feel we are just about there, and theres just a few loose ends to tie up, and a bunch of posts from over here to add to over there.

The domain contest thread had pretty much played itself out so it's been archived in case anybody cares to remeniss on it, though I see no need for that as we move forward.

Hence this is the tread that was formerly named nich.  (some of you might understand that, but if you don't, don't sweat it, it's just a joke).

This was the domain name contest thread and now it's the "finishing up the last few things thread, whilst still having a good time talking about it and making fun of CB's lack of artistic abilities.

1.  I still need assistance for those that are artistically talented with the buttons and icons, you can find the domain name contenst thread in teh City Dumps archive category for a reminder.

2.  Take a look at the screenshot that I've attached.  Something came to my mind this morning while I was moving threads over to the new site where they are more appropriate since they are not CB related.

If you look at the screenshot you'll notice an area of the screen that I've drawn a red box.  This is the basic navigation of the new forums, but it's not natural feeling.  When someone gets done posting a message they've got to scan (search) the page to find how to navigate back to the topic list, so we really need an easier way, a better way, an additional way (the existing way will stay in place simply because it's far more work to try to remove what's already there, compared to just adding something new to what's not there, if that makes sence.

I think we need some form of navigation so tht when someone has written a message they should be able to simply see a one click method of taking them back to the topic in that category, they shouldn't have to really look for it.   It shoudl really be so easy to spot that it feels like they've been using it foever.

So what is that which we can do, to create such a thing.  I don't know, but that's why we have this great brain trust here of people that have been surfing the web for years now and knows what feels natural, what works well and what doesn't.

I think I've made great strides forward by adding the categories to teh top of the website pages so that they appear on every page got thr msin categories but now we just need a way for a user that has written a new thread, or a a message to easily get back to their topic list that they were in when they wrote the message.

You'll notice that I've recolored the navigation links at the top of the page for the categories so that when you are in the simulation category, theword(s) SIMULATION GAMES or whatever it is that it says is now in a a RED color, I think this makes it pretty easy to stick out and remind them that they are in the SIMULATION category.  But we need an easy self intuitive, way of getting them back to the topic that they were in when they submitted the message so I'd love to hear peoples ideas on what we can add to the page to accomplish this.

In CBG it's rather simple really.  After I've submitted a thread, I simply click on the breadcrumb trail that is right above the posted message, it feel natural to do so, and of course it may not actually be since we've been doing it for over what 1.5 years now, so to newcomeers it may not feel that natural, but to me it does, nowever on the MGF site the breadcrumb  trail is off to the left side of the scrreen (at least it is on my screen so it feels un natural to have to move the mouse all the way over there and then choose the proper link to get them back to where I was to begin with.

I've thought that maybe they could simply click on the red navigation link at the top of the page, however that will only take them into the main category forum and not into the individual category that they were in to begin with.

So Im listening and thinking and need help to figure this oen out.

Thanks again everbody.
Adam

Never mind, Im just going crazy or too tired and perhaps overthinking things.

I've been staring at the website now for what seems like more than about 90 hours with breaks for the restroom and meals and for some reason completely forgot that it works very much like this website does.

If someonene clicks the Simulation Games link they are taken to the main forum index for simulation games, they then might click on Tycoon Games and are shown all the forums inside of the Tycoon games category.  So they decide to go into the Ski Resort Tycoon forum and write a message, and they hit the submit button.  It either  will take them back to their message or take them back into the  Ski Resort Tycoon category, so if they wish to go somewhere else in the Simulation game forums, they only need to click on the RED words Simulation Games (which I think sticks out enough to let them know where they are.  Once I get the new banner header logos done for each forum (using the existing ones but removing the people from it) and put the title of the forum somehow, in some way on there, there will be no mistaking where they are located in the forurms.  So if they are in the SImulation forums there will be somethign on the logo that has to do with simulations, maybe it will be a image of a flying aircraft flying over the water in the background with simple words, Simulation Forum trailing behind it on a flying banner or maybe it will just say simulation forum and nothing else, whatever.

The navigation is fine, It may take folks a few messages to get use to it, but once they do I thiink they will find it quite intuitive.

So, sorry for the first post.

So what's next.  Has anybody made a list of messages that I need to go and copy over to the new website maybe?

Thank you,
And our latest endeavor at the suggestion of one of the members here is a gaming wiki.  It will cotain information about all kinds of individual games, cheat codes, publishing information, walk througs, ane more.   That assumes that I can figure out how to properly use the wiki software which seems to me to be like programming a VCR clock, only a very small amount of the worlds population can actually program a VCR clock. wink
