Succently as possible.

Gives me the feeling that I want to go play Two Worlds or Titan Quest: Immortal Thrones again.

Why?  Well I think that  G3 has some nice visuals but it feels like Im running through soup when Im playing.  Going from High graphics to medium graphics lowers the quality tremendously, however doesn't seem to really improve the performance comparibly with how much it lowered the visual quality.

Im also kind of feeling like a nasty headache is coming on when Im playing, that might be attributed to all the screen spinning that happens in G3 but doesn't happen in games such as titan quest due to TQ's isometric static type of view.

I'm going to play a while longer tonight until it's  a full blown headache then put it away for the night and maybe try again tommorrow if I can find the time.  I will say though that I really like the music in the game, it's quite nice.

That's awfully considerate of you CB.. pat!! and RhiannOn seemed to have played Gothic III with no trepidation.. and that's great.

Like you I had orientation issues.. which made me feel upside-down half the time..or sticking through both sides of a wall..or whatever happened to be in my way.  I recall RhiannOn mentioning the different "views" and I think I stayed with one I could manage the best and lived with it.

Yes I meander into Two Worlds off and on..too.  I have some Mods that I'm still working on...just too many interuptions lately.   Laughing

Im just not sure if this game is really for me.

Heres what bugs me...  I can take on a league of orcs and defeat them without problem, but one bite from a wolf and THE END comes up on the screen and my character is left on the ground twitching.  Im not honestly sure how this could have been considered to be fun really.

Im gonna put it up for the night and maybe play something else for a while after dinner then try some new drugs the doctor has prescribed me (dalmane) and see if I can get a full night of sleep.

So far I think I much prefer both Two worlds and titans quest.  But out of the other one or two gothics that I've played I prefer this one so far (even with what ive written above) as it seems to hold the gamers hand a bit more at least in the beginning so far.

Thumbs Up  Yeah..steering clear of those long Fangs is recommended.  I agree that TW..did change my outlook on placing ALL RPG's in the same bag... at least for now.

Hope you rest well CB.. weather is so nasty up here..I might give TW's a go tonight..just for a few hours.  Big Day tomorrow..  wink

I found when fighting wolves or anything for that matter  if you are on a slope it is better for you to be the one facing upwards.  Wolves, saber tooth tigers , goblins and orcs etc kill you a lot easier as it is harder for you to hit them when fighting downhill.
Also if you can lure wolves etc to a camp, the other folk will slay them  Laughing,  I also lure one animal at a time, where possible.  You just don't get too close the mob so they will all see you.  Works with the orcs very well too  Thumbs Up.
Orcs a pretty dumb as they won't climb roofs  Big Smiley Grin Laughing, it is a good place to fight the orcs to liberate towns.  Oh and don't liberate 3 orc towns too soon as you will miss out on a lot of mission and the orcs are meant to get nasty after that at the very sight of you.  (I didn't have that problem, even tho it was meant to happen, as they were very friendly right to the end)

I found first person view a lot easier especially in fighting, tho when pilfering chests, going to the map etc I then went 3rd person and you don't get that 180 degree turn which was rather nausating.

Who have you decided to side with CB?   Orcs, Normads, rangers, rebels etc?

Thanks for the tips.

I don't think I've had the opportunity to side with anybody so far.  I'm only just starting so I've done a couple tasks for the rebels so far and liberated the smithy, now Im supposed to go and find some roaming orcs somewhere between the rebel camp and the starting town, but that's where I stumbled into the pack of wolves and my body lays twitching like an epileptic having siezures on the ground, so I guess Im meant to load up a previous save (Ummm I did save didn't I?  I hope so) and won't wander off in that direction this next time that I try it.

I'll have to try out the different views, though Im really not one to play in 1st person view, it feels like I've got tunnel vision since I can't see to the sides so things just sort of jump out at you from the sides which annoy me quite a lot, so if there is some inbetween view between the 3rd person which goes spinning around like a top sometimes and the 1st person then I'll give it a shot.

I am curious though how to kill the orcs?  When I liberated the smithy, I presumably killed all the orcs (4 or 5 times for that matter) but they just get back up say something about their aching bones and pretty much ignore me until I try to either attack them again or talk to them.

What I found really strange however is in the rebel camp, I did three quests for them and raised my prestige with the rebels but when I try to talk to them, most of them just tell me to leave them alone.  Im not so sure I'd be willing to side with a bunch of ingrates that don't praise my name every time they see me after getting them a key element in their fights (namely the smithy).

There is an attack you use for the actual kill.  I think it is hold right mouse button while pressing the left.  Your sword will raise automatically and then will be thrust into the "unconscious" orc. I did struggle with getting this action right.  Hence I used the bow more.
Usually when they are really angry with you their names will appear in red and when you fight them  they will just die without the special sword thrust.
Another way to kill orcs is by using the bow.  If they are friendly (their names white or green) they way to intimidate them is by using a bow from a distance....then you run.  Some will follow, others will not. Just go slowly back and pick em off. You may need to shoot a couple of arrows first to get their emtions going.   Agreed Happy

When you have finished a mission, if you go back to the person who gave it to you, you will receive more "experience or reputation" etc, even tho that particular mission will not now be in your "current" mission tab.

Yeah some folk will ignore you, even when  a mission is completed (how rude is that!!!  Laughing ).  Some others you will be able to trade with.  When you help them out, over time  their name will/may change from white to green - then you know you are their bestest friend.  Even the folk who gave you the mission will be a bit "rude" until the mission is completed, then they will thank you. A lot of folk are just secondary so their speech will be ratherrather cold.  example "haven't you got something else to do?"   Nerdy telling someone off.  Big Smiley Grin Laughing
As you move thru the game you will find companions to go with you.  I had Gorn for most of the time.  I think I got him from the rebel camp not far from Ardea (tho he was in Ardea at the beginning of the game, but he wasn't available for a companion at that time).

Try not to do the harder missions first as you will be put on a plate.  I found it better to do the smaller missions first and travelled around looting the caves and killing some of the wildlife to get my character up a few levels and get better weapons.  Pick as many plants as you can, especially the health plant.  And don't buy too much for starters as you will find lots of weapons etc on your travels.  Make sure you get a pick for later on when you need it for sulphur/ore and gold.  Sell a lot of the junk you find as you can buy better armour/clothes later. Don't sell the King Sorrell or Lobelia  plants when you pick them.   wink

You will find teleport stones throughout the game which is great as that cuts down on a lot of footwork.  However just be aware that when you use the teleport and you have a companion, he/she won't come with you. I travelled a lot of time on foot with my companion until a lot later in the game where I was a lot stronger and was able to tackle groups of orcs and wildlife hell of a lot easier on my own.

Sometimes the companions can't always follow you like down a steep back or up a mountain (which can be a pain) so I just kept to the road in these sort of areas, but would wander off where it was accessible.  If there was a place I wanted to go and my companion couldn't follow me I just asked him to "wait", then I would go back to him later.  If you lose your companion for some weird reason like when he walks into a cliff/hill never to be seen again  Big Smiley Grin Laughing just save and reload your game and he will be back with you.  However sometimes even that won't work so bring down console and type (example) "goto Gorn" without quotes then when you are with him  tell him to "go back" and he will walk out of the cliff.  Next talk to him again and tell him to "follow me" and off you go again.  I used the goto quite often with the companions because of their pathing issues, but it is worth having them.

My mouse settings:
for first person I set my mouse to            "sensitivity   " X Axis to   -13
                                                                       "               Y    "     "   -13
               "Invert"            default
"Smoothing"    to     -22    (cut down on the swaying motion)

Smiley Blink  RhiannOn that is a great help dialogue.  I use the same technique in Guild II with the "followme" option..when I'm in the courtship/marriage segment of that game.

I'm hoping that the views in Gothic III will be improved if Gothic IV becomes a reality..  wink  Plus you've pointed out it takes patience to allow time for you to become (lvlup)strong enough...so your dependency on a companion isn't as vital.  I'd get so keyed up..(I suck at melee fighting) I'd forget about him a number of times.  hehe ....And sometimes I just wanted to somehow use him as "bait". This games messes with your primal instincts for sure...  Laughing

Thanks for the information RhiannOn.

Let me ask you about mining.  I've bought a mining pick axe from the smithy that I saved and payed him to teach me some basic mining.  Im in the rebels cave and the guard that sent me to go defeat the queen ant at the south caver entrance eluded that the cave might have been or might still be good for mining.

I've been up and down that cave now trying to find someplace in there that looks like it might be a mining spot, taking swings at the walls only seems to lower my endurance levels but doesn't seem to actually do anything towards mining.  Is there any mining in that cave?  If so or if not, how do you locate mining spots in the world of G3?

Thanks,

Max, it's much like Two Worlds, some folks had to go around running a bit killing the boars and other wildlife to gain some levels before they could do any questing and what not, I imagine it's much the same in G3 for me, in TW I didn't have to do that but it would appear I will have to in G3.  There also seems to be a bit of luck involved as I killed the queen ant the first time without problem, but this last time (my save was very very old when I died) I died 3 times fighting the queen ant, I finally managed to get her outside and killed her on the 4th attempt however and my only thoughts on this could be that there has to be quite a bit of random dice rolling whether or not Im doing damage to my opponents or not.

Hmm, I vaguely remember not being able to find any mining there  Questioning.  If you find it, then I obviously didn't look hard enough.   Having to kill the Ant  was hard yakker.  I found the bow was the best for me with the ant as they have long claw thingies and would reach me easily.  I had to limp away licking my wounds a few times before killing it Big Smiley Grin Laughing   Big Smiley Grin Laughing

As for finding the mining you will see a mound and colouration on the cave/cliff walls.  ie ore will be purple, sulphur yellow, gold,  is gold.  When you are close to  the mining spot, the name of the metal etc will be visible.  Just use L mouse button when the name is visible and you will automatically start pickaxing it.  Once mined, you cannot remine that same spot.  Also check the ground around that same area for loose goodies.
There are graves that can be dug with a spade also, tho I wasn't able to find them/or didn't look hard enough Soapbox Speech with tape across mouth
