Little Old Sod Shanty

I am looking rather seedy now while holding down my claim
And my victuals are not always sewed the best
And the mice play shyly round me as I nestle down to rest
In my little old sod shanty on my claim.

Yet I rather like the novelty of living in this way
Thought my bill of fare is always rather tame
But I am happy as a clam, on this land of Uncle Sam
In the little old sod shanty on my claim.

But when I left my eastern home a bachelor so gay
To try and win my wealth and fame
I little thought that I'd come down to burning twisted hay
In my little old sod shanty on my claim.

My clothes are spattered o'er with dough, I'm looking like a fright
And everything is scattered round the room
But I wouldn't give the freedom that I have out in the West
For the babble of the Eastern man's old home.

Still, I wish that kind hearted girl would pity on me take
And relieve me the mess that I am in
The angel, how I'd bless her if this her home she'd make
In the little old sod shanty on my claim.

CHORUS:
The hinges are of leather and the windows have no glass
And the board roof lets the howling blizzards in
And I hear the hungry coyote as he sneaks up through the grass
Round my little old sod shanty on my claim

Do you remember Oregon Trail?

There have been a few other games as you describe but for the life of me I can't remember the names.  I'll have to look through some boxes and pull them out for you.

Yes! I actually still have the original Oregon Trail - however it is mostly an arcade game (shooting deer and Indians) and almost could be a board game since you basically make a random move and take potluck with whatever happens next.

Colonization, which came out around the same time as Civ2 was a 'New World' settler type game, but I can't find that one any more.

I too had Oregon Trail up until about a year ago when I finally pitched what I couldnt resell to ebgames store and that which I didn't want anymore.  I think I played OT for an hour at most when it was first released then it just sat on my shelf.

I voted for medieval.
I would have voted for ancient as well.
However, there are so many more of those and I see that category got most of the votes so I am happy with my choice.  I don't know why there aren't more medieval era cb's.  Only stronghold and that game called medieval lords comes to mind.  Maybe tropico ii as well but they do have guns over there so maybe not.  Come on...more medieval era cb's is what we need.

Hi pat!!

I'm really torn..I'd like to see a good CB Medieval too..at least from a reputable developer.

I've played them all.. the thread author mentioned Oregon Trail?..but of course..being a Oregonian whatta expect?

The emergence of city builders out of military based Civilization epic builders was a great diversion for those of us who dislike being strictly locked to Military strategy.  I was so elated when Caesar III made the leap to "..I want to be a Liontamer" speaking sprites and grumbling unpredictable marketladies. Then off we went..find that yellow grass to grow food. hehe  Well..Caesar III definitely defined the City Building  bar for all the titles that followed.

Not all games are or were intended to be "Pure" citybuilders as most of us have discovered.  That said, I'll buy a game if it remotely resembles a CB management type game.  So many Tycoon games have gone on my HD..and some were played with moments of satisfaction. Here's a few lists..bare with me since this is from memory. The order doesn't reflect the grade preference I personally have for the title.

  • Age of Empires and expansions, and recent
  • Age of Mythology + update
  • Caesar (orig) Caesar II,III, IV
  • Pharaoh/Cleo
  • Zeus/Poseidon
  • Stronghold I, II and expansions
  • Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingom
  • Children of the Nile
  • Civ City Rome
  • GoRE

Now in between playing the above list..somehow I found time to indulge in the next list.
  • Europa 1400, the Guild, Guild 2
  • All the Railroad Tycoons
  • Zoo Tycoon and expansions
  • Annos 1602,1503,1701
  • Patrician's I,II,III
  • Ports Royale's I,II
  • Tropico and expansions + Pirates Cove
  • Industy Giant, I, II
  • Railroad Pioneer
  • Trade Empires
  • Capitalism I,II

Games quite a few folks missed or the game wasn't readily available might've been one of these..
  • Gothic series
  • Medieval Lords-B.D.E
  • Cossacks I, II
  • American Conquest
  • Art of War, Back to War (cossack series)
  • Casino Inc, and expan. (sort of mature)
  • Transport Giant
  • KnM Peasant Rebellion
  • Civ all the series

With my sort of addiction.. I also delved into Sid Meier stuff..ala Pirates, Alpha Cent, then on to Freelancer, Sacred, Diablo's, Warcraft, B n W, Neverwinter Nights, Oblivion, plus some online StarWars Gal (very time consumming).  Some Sierra Casino builders..a couple of Gangsters..just for fun.  Many of these games listed I've been involved with I've participated with the devs..and much of my appreciation for the games were gained by realizing how much effort goes into making playable, intriguing..fun games for a wide variety of players.

Mmm? I just thought of another half dozen games..but I've carried on enough, it's pretty obvious I'm hooked on playing whatevers out there that remotely involves strategy. Laughing
