I use AVG Home free edition and windows firewall and when I actually allow AVG to do it's own thing it's never caused me any grief.  I use to fully support Avast antivirus and thought it was really superior to AVG, however I did manage to come down with a virus that required a complete reformat and reinstall of everything and I was letting Avast do it's thing and update properly and on time etc etc, since that happened I've gone back to AVG and not had any problems since.

I still occasionally turn off AVG when Im playing some games, but mainly just to prevent it from starting up it's scanning of all my HDD's which it does on a daily basis since that is what mainly slows down the games but in general AVG hasn't ever allowed me to catch a virus even when I purposely tried to do so  (to test AVG) and for the life of me I can't recall why it was that I switched to Avast in the first place.

Thanks CB,

I took Taz's advice and downloaded the free edition.  I was able to play CoTN with a large city and hold festivals without any lag interference from virus protection.

You said you turn yours off sometimes.  How do you do that?

Launch AVG control center (right click on AVG icon in your system tray) then click on the toolbar "File" then Exit, this exits AVG completely and you'd need to reboot or restart AVG manually when you wish to restart it.

The other option that I use more often is that I know that my AV will start scanning at 3PM every single day, so I wait until 3:01 to start playing games (yeah right) and once it starts scanning I click on the AVG rotating icon in the system tray and choose cancel scanning, then acknowledge that's what I wish to do.  This leaves AVG running like it should but means that it skips that days scanning of my hard drives which when you have 4 or 5 hard drives takes quite a while to perform, and theres just no way for me to play a game when it's scanning, it makes the games all laggy when it's actually scanning for viruses on it's daily run.

Hope that helps.
