Need some advice here, please.  Since AT&T is haveing a hell of a time supporting their miserable Security Suite, Crying I need to look elsewhere for my pc protection.

Any thoughts?  I guess it would have to be one I can turn off when I play my resource hogging games.

 Hello and Welcome  Hi Cat

Longtime... whattca playing lately?

Over the years I've used..or tried to use most everything that has been made for Virus Security.  What I've used the most has been AVG and ZoneAlarm.. but had to "learn" when and how to make them effective..  There's others that do as well as can be expected.. but these two I understand and I have zero problems ..they have done what I think they should.

I have purchased Pro Copies of each.. and they update regularly and do not cause problems with my games.  I turn ZA off when I install anything and that's it... AVG runs all the time updates itself..  One thing I do have a separate email server..items are scanned several times before I read them.  Also I have an extra firewall over the normal config that accompanies the OS and routers etc.

It would be interesting to hear what others have used and how well their selections have performed.   The only one I have ill will toward is Norton.. I won't elaborate.. because I know many users have this one in place and the experiences vary.  Smiley Blink

Glad you dropped in...  I'm trying my best to find time to have a serious Guild 2 session.. really I am.   Big Smiley Grin Laughing

I used ZoneAlarm Pro for 2 years.  You have to resubscribe every year. Improvements that I saw did not improve it's performance, especially pop up blocking, and were limited only to extra features (pop up blocking). I didn't like it. I was constantly downloading new defintion tables and then fixes for the definitions, and I kept being interrupted when launching games (directX) with connection warnings, and couldn't get to the warning due to being in directX mode. Also, when I finally removed it, I had a helluva time getting rid of it. I can't recommend ZoneAlarm.

In two years time, I had no reports of any found viruses. But I had a lot of extra work to put up with, and usually these occurred at very inconvenient times. The short story is, I don't like virus protection. I use common sense instead and avoid any sites that don't have a name in the address bar and instead only show ip numbers.

If you run one, I highly suggest that you don't run it in the background. Instead, scan your puter once a day when it's convenient for you. This saves time and computer resources.

I have a neighbor who ran Norton's Antivirus. He was constantly clogged. His puter ran slower than molasses. Support from them always had him confused, and he complained about this on a weekly basis. He finally removed it. His puter now runs great.

Windows' Firewall is adequate.

Thanks Guys  Happy Dance

I guess I'm also concerned about which ones will not cause my games to lag.  I only go to a few sights from my home pc (Tilted Mill, Heaven Games, Amazon and here) the other sights I go to at work as they have all kinds of protection there.

Thanks again  Happy Dance

Hi Max, I put The Guild 2 up for a while (although I can hear the peeps calling me when I log on to my pc) and am back to my all time favorite CoTN.  I love that game!!!

Laughing  Yes Cat.. I'm playing a bit of Guild 2 this weekend.  Just so I don't get too rusty.  wink

Whatever AV you decide on...just remember we all have personal preferences and individual established PC habits.  I'm pretty much a utility fanatic.. I've tried just about everything I run across.  So maybe for you ..just finding one that fits your situation will happen soon.   I likewise don't Surf the Net extensively anymore..just specific fan sites for games I play...and occasional News worthy items.  My time is too valuable for things I enjoy spending time with.. and the visits here do reward me many great and quality discussions.   Smiley Blink  Ah yes..Children of the Nile.. it certainly is a great game, and born from the Classic City Builders I grew up on.. I too play them all from time to time.

Good to have you visit us.. hope the Winter is treating you well. Agreed Happy

Hi Max,

Yes winter is treating me well enough.  Getting a lot of gaming done on the weekends since we are in drought conditions and I can't do much in the garden anyway, being winter and all. Crying

Hope you are doing well these days and kicking butt and taking names with The Guild 2.

I think I'll go with the AVG.  It is suppposed to be light and windows does recommend it.  I'll keep you posted.

 Hello and Welcome CatMajik,

I am using the free version of AVG, have had no problems with it and it does a good job.  Agreed Happy

My garden is under 3 feet of snow.  No drought here  Looking around cautiously, but it will be hard to wait for all that snow to melt so I can get into it in the spring.  Crying

Thumbs Up  Glad you've chosen one that will do a decent job...and doesn't have issues with games.

Yep..Cat..I'm winter weary too.. seems like it has been winter since Thanksgiving.   Sticking Tongue Out

Hope spring comes early.. and Taz and I can dry out .  I miss working in the yard..and it really needs some attention presently.   As for Guild 2, I'm about four hours into a fresh new game.   wink

Always great to hear for both of you..  Big Smiley Grin Laughing

Hi Taz, thanks for the AVG input.   Happy Dance  I donloaded it and will play today lag free.  It is great when a free virus protection works so well.  Most anti-virus really slow down the pc unless you can turn it completely of, but then you have to remember to turn it back on before you get back on-line.

Max, Taz I guess you guys have ahd a busy winter will all the snow and storms.  Soon we can go out and play in our gardens.  Smiley Blink

For some reason the previous 2 time I've sent this post it doesn't show up, sorry if they do and this is redundant.
